My laptop gives this error

SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0: Toshiba M4025GAS-(PM)

1720-S.M.A.R.T Hard Drive detects imminent failure (Failing Attr:05h) Please back up contents of the hard drive and run HDD self test inF2 setup

i'm wanting to sell it and I need to know if changing the HD would fix it.

I would expect a hard drive replacement to fix the issue, yes. If you reformat the drive, you might get more diagnostic information. Running a program like HD Tune to find errors would also provide insight.

SMART register 0x05 is the reallocated sector count. This means the drive itself has found bad sectors and is mapping requests for the bad sectors to sectors at other physical locations on the disk. This keeps the drive up, but hurts performance.

The error message means that the number of reallocated sectors has exceeded a limit (usually 100, I thnk) and the drive is running out of space to do the reallocations.

Ya, and you knew it was a compaq.

Yeah I know I was just asking if it is cause any harddrive can throw out this problem sometimes it can just be something minor making it happens other times it can mean the whole drive is fubar

A steadily increasing number of bad secotrs, well over 9/10 of the time, means a drive running on borrowed time. Time for RMA/replacement.

Thing is though. I've tried taking it apart and I have no idea how to get this hard drive out. Its almost impossible.

if its like most new laptops the harddrive is inside its chassy and your going to have to open it up

ya, I've tried that but I just can't get the top off. Even with all the screws out I still can't pop the thing off. I know they've had it off tbefore cause they had to switch out the fan once. So I know its possible.

well alot of laptops you have to pull the screen, and sometimes the keyboard (careful as some keyboards are screwed in through the bottom screws)
