Laptop crashing

i just got this laptop from my dad and it keeps crashing, its about a year old, its a 1ghz athlon. im thinking its getting too hot because there is a fan underneath not running and it crashes after running for awhile and then you have to wait for a bit to turn it back on. are there any programs out there to detect laptop cpu temps?

Possibly, it would help if you specified the model and any other specs you might know.
