Having some temp issues on new build. What I noticed is I used this sink on the last build and my temps were not as good as I had hoped. When I removed the HSF I saw an area in one corner that had no paste. This was more area then I would like to see without a good squish pattern. I found the same problem on my 2600K when I did a test fit. I picked up some MX4 to reapply later on and I am debating on lapping this thing. I held a razor blade across it and its got one hell of a bow in the heatsink like my last TRUE did. I dropped 4C lapping my TRUE last time. I dropped a total of 7C when I lapped the HSF and the CPU. Scary process but in the end it was worth it. Anyone have any luck lapping the Megahlaems? Is there a heatsink out that is better?
 
Screw it.. I ordered the Thermalright Archon. I needed the extra room around my RAM anyways.

LOL.. yeah I got impatient. Plus when I saw this gives me more room for my RAM it solves another problem I was having. I plan on doing a push/pull config to see if I can get 5ghz Daily out of this thing. If not.. oh well
 
Copyright, since you're not really looking for help anymore. Could you possibly give me some pointers or links on lapping a heatsink as well as the cpu? I got a zalman performa that has a noticeable bow and I want to try lapping.

Make sure you have a flat surface (most people use a sheet of glass).

DO NOT put pressure or weight on the cpu or heat sink. Let its own weight provide pressure.

Make sure that you rotate 90 degrees after each set. Also, keep careful track of where you are in a rotation.

Remember that a flat surface is your goal, not just a mirror finish.

I've already lapped my heat sink. I'm going to lap my cpu this afternoon so I'll let you know if I learn anything else.

What grades of sandpaper do you use? I have some really fine grit stuff like 600-2000 but I think it'll take foreverrrrrrr to actually get the flat surface.

I think that I did 400 > 800 > 1000 > 1500 > 2000. I used something like 3 sheets of 400 but only 1 sheet of the finer grits.
 
JapaneseGorilla did what I did. I used a piece of glass for my surface and also rotated the sink to help get a flat base. It's a pain in the azz but so far has worked great for me in the past. I am surprised your Zalman is so uneven. They are usually pretty good. Good luck!

I think I'm comfortable with the idea of lapping the heavy heatsink with its own weight, but what about the cpu? It doesn't really have the weight to sand itself. How did you guys go about it?

From what I understand, it does have enough weight. I mean, the only other solution would be to attach some sort of perfectly balanced weight to it. It has to be perfectly balanced or you are going to end up with an unbalanced surface which is the very problem you are trying to fix.

Basically, just let the cpu's own weight do the work. Obviously it would go faster if you leaned on it as you were sanding, but would ruin your outcome. No one said that this was an easy or quick process.

Like I said, I'm going to lap my CPU when I get home in a couple hours. I'll take some photos if you like and make a thread.
 
Haha yes, I didn't think for one second that this would be easy or simple. Quite nervous actually but I def want to try it out.
