I run lans based on HL2, CS:S, HL2 DM, UT:GOTYE, UT2004, etc. I have an old P3 933mhz with 256mb ram and I need some advice on using it as a dedicated until I get my new server. I need to know of a good Linux version to put on it to maximize dedicated stability/capability but I pretty much need it to be semi easy as far as visual with GUI goes to make it easy to open/switch servers. If i could remotely control it from my main machine using remote desktop or server administration for various dedicated programs would be fantastic. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Also what kind of loads can I put on this server based on the games I listed. Thank you very much in advance!

Don't use the GUI. You should use the in-game management software to admin the servers and SSH to run the actual applications. It's not that hard to figure out how to do it; sitting down with Linux for a night or two will be more than ample.

Ok Thanks for the tip. So basically I can run it from my machine through a web browser or even can I type commands like "map_sweetmap.map" and it will load. If thats the case how does it know it's me and not my friend playing a trick?

Have you ever used rcon functions in the q3 engine? Its just like that.

for ut you can set up webadmin and do it that way, for the others, you will need to learn the console functions and either telnet into the machine or do it remotely (r(emote)con(sole)) commands. I do as much thru the client as possible so I dont have to drop out of a game to swap maps or change gametypes.
