I would like to test out SRM in my lab environment, I am not concerned about performance as much as I am about doing a proof of concept right now.

I currently have two physical ESXi servers (no local disk) attached to a 6tb iscsi (freenas) server. My thought is to build a virtual 2 node esxi cluster within each physical server.

Does anyone have any storage virtualization recommendations to support replication? I can destroy my freenas box and allocate the disk (6x1tb drives) to each physical esxi box if I need to, though I'd like to avoid it.

Looking for a poor man's way to architect an otherwise expensive enterprise architecture. I'm only looking to test with it for a week or two... if anyone has any experience with playing with SRM at home i'd love to hear how you did it?
 
SRM5 has host based replication built in. :)

LHN VSAs have a trial, and have replication capabilities. And an SRA for 5.
 
Thanks lopoetve, I will check those out. I should have mentioned I want to utilize storage based replication in my testing as we will be utilizing NetApp in our production deployment and I'd like to mimick the concept.

The hardest part is going to be finding time on the weekend to tackle this little project :)
 
Not sure if the NetApp VSA supports replication or not..but there is one..if you can get it. The EMC VNX VSA supports it and works well for a SRM lab.

fat pig when it comes to resources though :p 4+Gb of ram to run well, in my experience.
 
Been trying to get access to that VSA for a couple weeks now, unfortunately we wont be an official NetApp customer until April.

I've only got 16gb of memory in each host, might be a bit tight to fit in a pair of virtual esxi servers and the vsa @ 4gb of ram, but worth a shot.

The LHN trial only wants 1G.
 
Trying out the HP VSA for an SRM lab. For iSCSI traffic, i can route this via a vpn tunnel right?
 
So I ended up going with the VNX VSA to test out SRM 5. I'm having an issue which I am hoping someone can help me with:

Network Info:

Protected Site: 192.168.1.0/24
Recovery Site: 10.20.10/24

The two sites are connected via a VPN Tunnel.

I'm trying to setup the replication between the VSA's and I cannot seem to add the remote VSA because they are unable to communicate. The VPN is functioning as I am able to ping from between my protected and recovery sites.

VSA Protected Administrative IP: 192.168.1.250
CGE0 IP: 192.168.10.250 (iscsi network)

VSA Recovery Adminstrative IP: 10.20.10.250
CGE IP: 172.16.29.250 (iscsi network)

For the iSCSI traffic, I have a dedicated interface on my ASA and I am adding that to the VPN access lists so those two iscsi networks are able to communicate. I'm sure there's some sort of route I have to specify on the VSA to get this working but no luck so far. Any ideas?
