well, this is a kinda dumb question...... but hey im stumped. ive never built a computer so i have never had to deal with fans or cfm or dba or rpm or anything like that. i was just wondering about the noise level of fans.

for example would:

a 20 dba fan plus a 20 dba fan equal 40 dba or stay at 20. my instinct would be it would stay at 20 but i really have no idea.

im totally in the dark and could really use some help thank you all.

The dBA scale is logarithmic, and for every 3 dBA you add, your noise pressure level doubles. Thus, 4dBA is twice as loud as 1dBA, and 7dBA is four times as loud.

So, theoretically, if you added another identical fan, and the fans's noise did not interpolate with each other, you'd go from 20dBA to 23dBA.

That's why car stereo sound-off competitions are often being decided in microbels these days - to increase the sound pressure by three dBa you have to DOUBLE the amount of speakers and power in your ICE system.
 
If the sound level was the sum of the fans in your case, we would all be dead. The noise alone would bring our houses down. Excellent question though....certainly not dumb.
