i removed the cooler to put on heat sink compound.
when i put the card back in i get littel squars on screen i can make out sone things.did i kill it
 
uh... you might have poor contact due ot the shim, but checking your sig i realize you have a 9800 series card which shoudln't give you those problems. All i can say, is clean off the GPU very well with isopropyl alcohol and/or acetone (nail polish remove w/o fragrances etc) and try again. Dont use too much TIM, especially if there is silver in it.
 
That is called artifacting, and yeah, you probably broke it. The card is also not replaceable. Just try to clean it and replace the HSF and pray.
