Hi all!

I'm starting to dabble in Folding@Home and just my first worker up and running 24/7: the PS3. I changed my donor name in the client to my moniker and set the team number to 33. Turned off the music, TV, lights, and left it to do its thing. I may end up landing a cheaper 40GB PS3 or two down the road for some added punch, depending on how I like this.

So far so good?

By the way, the machine I'm posting from is currently busy at an abundance of World Community Grid WUs via BOINC. Does anyone else participate in DC using this?
 
There are a few that fold for WC, you can pick up a badge for both F@H and WC

Welcome and if you want to get a GPU up and running for FAH just let us know and we will be glad to help. (since this will not mess up your contribution to WC)

I would like to get a GPU client up and running on the laptop (this) but it's using an 86m which has had some heat-related problems arise in the past in moderate (< 1 hour) gaming, alone. I've budgeted and started saving for a dedicated box and was wondering if you can (effectively) run either combination of a GPU and CPU client simultaneously on the same machine or a GPU and BOINC client together?

I'm not overly familiar with BIONC, so I will speak of F@H and it should apply:

You can run GPU and CPU clients on the same box at the same time. The GPU borrows a small amount of CPU to feed the client (5-10%) Depending on the CPU you can run a single client, or a SMP client or with a good quad 2x SMP (a fave at the [H]orde.)

If/when you decide to build the box let us know, we can help with hardware pics and help with clients to maximize your production.

My fantasy build is a successful 24/7 Beckton box (8 core Nehalem, 16 threads [overclocked if reasonable?]) with possible heavy GPU participation depending on compatibility with the motherboard. Once these CPUs and boards emerge on the market, I'd like to gauge the cost-effectiveness of such a setup. That's where I'll need you guys' help. I basically want the greatest computation possible for the budget.

Right now the best bang for buck per science preformed is a good ol' 8800GT or GS (can be had for under well $100 AR)

Install client and watch it go! :cool:

 
Thanks for the great replies. If one was to utilize a multi-GPU setup, is SLI necessary or not even applicable?

Right now the GPU does not use sli. You just run a client for each GPU core. Sli must be disabled.

Yes (I currently have a 9800GX2 on the way) The clients just see it as 2 different GPU cores.

They are still working on ATI optimization. Thus the ATI cards do no put out as much at the Nvidia cards. Still worth running in my opinion if you already have one.

 
Maybe a silly question, but is there a web page where I can view my daily output with reference to the team?

Although that would be a dream machine for most people without a doubt, unless Intel's roadmap has changed and I'm not aware of it, Beckton is slated to be released as an MP processor. It won't be compatible with single socket or dual sockets. Think of it as the replacement for the soon-to-be-released hex-core Dunnington processor. Dunnington is not compatible with S775 or S771 (dual-socket) but S604 which is a rather anachronistic socket design. Beckton will be Dunnington's successor. There will eventually be octal cores for the desktop, but it probably won't be Beckton and will arrive later.

Ordinarily, the highest performing parts are some of the worst choices for a folding machine due to the poor production per dollar ratio. Somewhere in the mid-range market usually typifies the 'sweet spot' for folding hardware. IOW, nothing too old and nothing recently released. If you're looking for a single folding machine that can do everything and do it with style, that's a completely different story. Get the best you can buy, within reason of course. If money is no object, get the best period.

This is without a doubt the [H]ardest folding team on the "Net" or any place for that matter. If a question about folding can't be answered by one of our experienced members, you can take it to the bank, that there's no answer known to mankind. OBTW, it's never happened before and never will, hell, you'll get an answer even if the answer isn't widely known to mankind. , Our "old timers" will go out of there way to help anyone ("old timers" = time folding not age) ;)

Ah. I got my first uploaded in 6-8 hours, so I'll go check.

edit: Cool, it's there. Is it normal for it to say I'm not active?
 
Cool stuff, thanks! My next investment is an Uninterruptible Power Supply; power outage here caused the PS3 to lose the 5-6 hours' work on its current WU.

PPD or overall?

If it's PPD, you have a nice mini farm going :cool:

If it's overall, you better have one heck of a green thumb and I'll fight you for that spot in the top 50. :p

 
My peak while there was 30-40k PPD but I've sold systems and retired others. My goal by December is to get a consistent 20k PPD, which should be pretty easy once I land a dedicated quad core (its power consumption should be much less than those combined P4s I used). I will try to add a GPU or two to the quad box for f@h, as well.

Ahh..., I think what brother BillR was gettin' at was Welcome a broad (female), fold, brag about friggin' the broad in a post, make more foldin' babies and hope you don't get tha' clap (or something like that) :D

Edit: I just reread the post; in the first post the OP talks about dabbling in folding, IMO there ain't no "dabbling" with F@H, it's 99.9999 addictive. Remember the ole' sayin' "The road to bein' in the top 5 folding producers on the [H]orde team 33 is paved with having a lot of 24/7 folding boxen" (or something like that ;))
