jaggies & slowdowns

hey,

i got an asus x800 pro 256mb and there are a few problems with it. first of all, i see jaggies in games even though i have enabled 16x fsaa and 4x aa in the catalyst control center. the only game that is smooth from the edges is half life 2 and only because it has in-game settings for anti-aliasing. i have "let application decide" option turned off in my card settings.

second of all, i get stuttering in wow and half life 2. what happens is my computer slows down for a few moments and i hear the windows 'ping!' sound in the background. my cpu is also hard at work and the red front led is going off the scales. my hd is also working hard during this time.

if any of you could take the time to read my post and give some helpful feedback, it would be most appreciated!

ps: is there a [h]ard irc chat anywhere?

Stuttering in HL2 is suppose to happen because theres a problem with the engine, but in WoW, not to sure. My guess is that there could be a problem within the card it self? Any artifacts? Overclocked?

hi again,

no, the card is stock, as in, not overclocked. there are no artifacts that i can notice; the card runs at a solid 40 celsius.

Changing AA/AF settings without rebooting never has worked for me, did you reboot after changing it?

after changing your AA/AF settings in D3D or OpenGL just hit 'ok' instead if 'apply'. If you hit apply and then hit ok it screws stuff up sometimes. almost like its applying twice or something.

hi again,

okay, i got fsaa and aa working now.
next up is my second inquiry: why does my system take a huge plunge in many games for seemingly no reason? i'll be happy to post dxdiags or whatever else if you want them.

thanks for your help!

I recently acquiered a 6800gt oc. From what I read and expected, I should be flying in my games. The sad truth is that yes the card is faster than what I had, but I don't know how much in real world gaming. I play Ut2k4 mostly and had my 9800pro and 9800xt running the game at 16x12 with most things on high settings, application pref on aa/af and a couple of the eye-candy things turned down/off. I would get about 60fps most of the time. After getting the GT, I now have all settings on high/est with 2xaa/2xaf, again getting 60fps. But both cards slow down on the same maps almost exactly. I tried 4aa/4af with the GT and my machine sttttutttered pretty bad. I think some maps/environments require a crapload of processing power and it's just too much for the system, hence the slowdown, no matter what card you use.

Did you do a clean system format of Windows XP SP2 when you got this video card? Did you update your chipset/BIOS drivers?

hello again, and sorry for the long absence,

no i did not format my hd when i aquired the card. my bios and all system drivers are the latest availible.

Rhentno, do you hear the windows "ping!" sound whenever those slowdowns happen?

on a related note, i still get jaggies in some games such as splinter cell: pandora tomorrow. rather strange i would say.
