Whenever Ivy Bridge finally hits retail, I'll finally be replacing my trusty but ancient Athlon64-X2. Since I have a real graphics card, I thought I'd use the integrated GPU for folding. Apparently that's not yet possible. Well, what about SETI@Home I thought? Nope, the BOINC client doesn't look for Intel GPUs yet. So my question for the [H] is this: are there any distributed computing projects I can use this allegedly moderately spiffy HD4000 for?

no and even if it could the HD4000 wouldn't do anything nor finish a WU for any project in time. while its ok for watching movies and light gaming its just not designed for actual computing.
lets put it this way, yes its better than the intel HD3k and HD2k IGP's the gpu on a AMD e-350 dual core is still better than it.

Not as far as I know, intel igps don't have enough power for folding and i dare say its the same for most of the bonic projects - I don't even know if they have a gpgpu programming language for those igp's?

Integrated GPUs are like dead hookers. They might look pretty at first, but very quickly you realize they aren't useful for anything and just plain stink.
They do seem to support openCL.
*sigh* So the only thing that expensive little chunk of silicon is really good for is video transcoding, which I have zero use for? Seems like such a waste. I mean, I know anything integrated is crap, but you'd think it'd at least be better than a CPU for this kind of thing.

It depends on the kind of work, that's why there are clients for multiple types of CPU's, as well as GPU's and even PS3's.
IGP's are more to make something more attractive to system builders like Dell, Sony, etc etc. They have to have a chipset anyways, now that chip set gives you a CPU with a GPU in it, one less thing for OEM's to add in. Keeps things smaller and easier. Plus it had to be better than their older graphics chips because now you can atleast do all every day tasks without needing a discrete GPU. Plus, it allows power saving options, if you have a beefy GPU you can pretty much shut it off in the down time while you IGP does the day to day stuff with much less draw

Intel is playing catchup in IGP ...
Their next gen IB cpu's IGP is about half the performance of AMD's llano APU's.
If you want an IGP that will eventually fold AMD's trinity has a better chance. Though the performance of ~400sp of gcn will still be terribad.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but intel's igp is sugarcoated crap...

trinity is VLIW4
, kaveri will be the GCN based APU.trinity probably will be able to run and finish GPU WU's but i wouldn't expect the points to be much higher than what the old 8600GTS's did back in the day. still not bad for consuming less power than an 8600GTS. i think there were a couple people that messed around with folding on llano but i can't remember what ended up actually happening.

No point. The Ivy Bridge GPU looks good only because it's often compared to the Sandy Bridge GPU. Compared to any dedicated GPU other than a 5450, it sucks balls.

but only slides of gcn...

its definitely VLIW4, its in their road map as 2nd gen dx11 which is VLIW4 and kaveri being the steamroller module GCN APU.
a little hint into what to expect with trinity of the clocks are what they end up being at retail.
