It's about time!

I agree that this is a significant problem and I'm disappointed in both ATI & NV. It would be a lot easier to correct them as consumers if there was only one guilty party to punish, but no such luck these days. Certainly if we could stop acting like the computer hardware geek equivalent of crack addicts and pullback from the frenzied "I must buy at any cost" mentality we might send a message, if not to the manufacturers at least to their opportunist partners in retail. What would happen if we said we won't play their game or pay a dime for their products until and unless they are actually available in reasonable quantity? I wonder if the lying and marketing hype would be reduced? I wish I could see an end to our encouragement of this bad behavior, but I don't think it's likely. I hope that I'm wrong about that.
 
That brings a good point blackpearl. I guess we bring it on ourselves to a degree. Does anyone have any data on what percentage of the market is made of $300 or above video cards?

I purchased a GF3 for $300, ive since bought a GF4Ti4600 for near that same price... and a 9800pro 128mb for $365. Now I am faced with having to spend MORE money, for less of an increase in performance(percentage wise) as I have in the past.

Most of the products that are severely hyped, and extraordinarily delayed seem to be the higher end parts. ATi and nVidia do not seem to have a problem filling their mobile sector or low end markets.

Anyone have data on what kind of impact us gamers that want high end parts make? I'm guessing if we know that... then we can better know what to expect out of them in the future, as well if we are in a position to be making demands. ... or do we just sit here and suck on it, because there are not enough of us to make a difference.
 
Yes, it would be interesting to learn more about where the greatest profitability is in the graphics biz, but I fear that the enthusiast market is a pretty small piece. As far as I know, neither ATI nor NV is the leader in the overall graphics market, both behind Intel - that suggests to me that the top of the market, where Intel doesn't play, can't be the most significant. But I think that there is an important "aura" which comes from making the highest performing enthusiast part and that may yield benefits in other (higher revenue?) areas like integrated graphics and consoles. If that's the case, it could enhance the impact of us enthusiast consumers.
