Issues with an installation

Story:
So my mother and father in law needed a new computer and for the most part they are, how do you say, not well off. As such I volunteered my services so here we are. I have the pc built but when I go to do my OS installation I am having some issues.

Specs:
P4 3.06 proc
250gb wd sata hdd
Foxconn P9657AB 775 Motherboard
550 Watt PSU
7800gt video card
2 gb of kingston ddr2 667

So basically a small/low end pc.

Issue:
So now to the issue. I have everything hooked up I apply power to the box and it gets through the BIOS checks and after a few seconds, dies. Wash rinse repeat. I have found a few articles online that suggest trying to boot without the HDD connected and I plan on doing this tonight. Any other suggestions.

Hmm... could be a power supply thing, perhaps? Or anything, for that matter. :-p

Try disconnecting everything except one stick of RAM; if it boots normally, try adding parts one by one to see what the culprit is. If it doesn't even work with one RAM stick, then try replacing it, or trying to boot up without it. If you have an extra power supply, try hooking it up.
