Hello, I was looking into video cards earlier today and I found a GREAT value: the ATI X800XL. This thing performs as well as the 6800GT and the X800Pro (HardOCP article), and costs only $300. That's $100 less than the other two cards I just mentioned.
The only problem I have with this card is that it is PCI-E. I don't have a PCI-E motherboard, but I may just buy one since my current SiS mobo is aging.
So I would like to discuss whether it is a good idea to buy a PCI-E compatible motherboard right now, and if this video card is indeed the best there is for around $300 USD.
 
the fact that you'll have to upgrade you system to be able to accommodate that pci-e video card technically translates in paying more for that video card. no?
if you're system is old and slow than go ahead and upgrade so that you could get this pci-e video card otherwise look for some alternatives.
 
my mobo is not too old but i was planning on making more than one upgrade anyway, so that i can put some high performance RAM in there later on. is it viable to buy a PCI-E mobo at this time or are they still in their infancy?

EDIT: we will all need to make the switch from AGP to PCI-E sooner or later, right?

is it a good idea to get a PCI motherboard at this time? or is the technology still too new and i will regret this purchase later? please give me some info on current and future PCI-E compatible motherboards.
 
It's a good idea if you want it to be. Basically, PCI-Express is the up-and-coming standard, so at some point you will probably want a PCI-Express board.
 
Don't expect to pick up an X800 XL for $299 immediately. It may be that they remain at inflated prices for a while yet. As far as I'm aware, there are no 'new technology' problems associated with PCI-e, so getting a new motherboard (and possibly a CPU depending on what you have at the moment) wouldn't be a problem.

If the X800XL drops in price, by all means change to PCI-e without worry.

I'm pretty much sure that vid cards manufacturers will support AGP for a while - they should be well aware of the number of ppl with not that old mobos but without PCI-E..
