Is this processor chipped (broken/dead)?

So I recently bought a mobo/cpu combo from someone, and I cant get the board to post. Ive tried everything to no avail. I noticed when applying thermal paste that the cpu looked like it had a little chunk missing from the corner, but thought nothing of it at the time. Now I cant think of anything else to check, except the CPU. Tell me if this could be the culprit. Thanks in advance.

Chris

edit: more of my woes; AMDMB.COM Anandtech

Definitely. To me, it almost looks like three of the corners are chipped. I would say the chances of that chip working are pretty small.

try the cpu in another motherboard and try the motherboard with another cpu

would 'chips' as small as that make the cpu unworkable?
possible there is no way of telling if that is all of the chip there could be a crack in it too

although i have seen durons with more damage than that actualy work better:eek: one thing is for sure you dont want to use artic silver on it

especially if its cracked, or do you mean in general? I could understand why if its cracked, that would certainly short it, BUT I also tried the chip with a Speeze heatsink with pre-applied thicker/less conductive thermal paste and it did the same thing (this is before I put any AS5 on it).

there could be a crack into the crystal horizontaly the only way to know if the chip works or not is to put it in a mobo with a heat sink and test
