So I just bought one of those new Mac Pro's. But, I want to add my own hard drives. I'd like to use a WD Raptor for boot and then this 500Gb Seagate .

So I guess it all boils down to, can I have drives that have different transfer rates? Or would I be better off putting two 160GB HD in RAID 0 instead of the Raptor?

Note the Mac Pro's come standard with 250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s, 7200-rpm, 8MB cache.
 
I'm not an expert on Macs. I do not have any. Forgive my ignorance...but do you have an Intel based Mac?

However, a setup such as you describe would certainly work on a PC. SATA is a point-to-point protocol, each devices has its own dedicated channel to the host.

I can tell you that the 150GB Raptor will absolutely demolish two 7200 RPM 160GB drives in RAID-0 in terms of system responsiveness and random access performance.
 
Correct, I have (ordered) a new Intel based Mac based on two 3.0Ghz Woodcrests. So since it's running on an Intel chipset and Intel processor I believe your advice to me is correct!

So, other than the difference in thoroughput, the connections are identical?

Well then, I'll definitely pick up the Raptor. I'll update this in about a month when I get everything :)

There's no difference in actual throughput of the drives mechanically. The transfer rates and seeks you get out of the drives will be identical, regardless of whether the drives run in 1.5 or 3gbps mode. The only reason 3gbps is such a big deal and featured so prominetly in marketing literature is it is "twice as fast" as lowly 1.5 gbps SATA :rolleyes: Never mind that no hard drive is mechanically capable of saturating a 1.5gbps link, let alone a 3gbps link.
 
Ahhh thanks for the info Doug, I thought that didn't make sense! I'll let you know how everything goes in a month :)
