So I was at my local Salvation Army yesterday, and they had one of those Jeep portable boomboxes (GIS here), yellow, though, not black. Looking at it, I immediately see its potential as a mobile computer/custom case. Thing is, that I would want to re-use as much of the existing interface as possible, including the clamshell-style optical drive. If you all think this might work, I'll go back today/tomorrow and pick it up, assuming it is still there (probably is). My question is, has anyone tried (successfully or unsuccessfully) anything like this....moving the guts of an optical drive to another form factor. If it is possible, it would seem to me that modding something like this into it would be the only/best solution (yes, no, maybe?). Given that, does anyone know of a reasonably priced top loading combo drive or DVD burner that might work for this? Any other thoughts or ideas?
