Is my wc setup overkill?

I have a 4790k at 4.8ghz @ 1.33v and 2 980ti in sli oc'd to 1500mhz. My water cooling setup consists of a 480 up top and a 420 and 280 rads in bottom of a Corsair 900d. It's being pushed by a couple of mcp655 pumps to keep pressure good. I was curious if that cooling is overkill for my setup?

That is some serious cooling power, sounds like a pretty sweet setup. Never overkill if you have a setup that satisfies you, some of the mod's out there are absolutely amazing and technically can be considered as overkill but for someone out there it is "Just Right!"

Enjoy the setup!

No such thing as overkill in watercooling. :D

I have an XT45 420, UT60 360, and XT45 240, all for just a 4930K @ 4.5GHz/1.35V and one single 980 Ti @ 1530/7800.

All rads in push/pull except 240 only has 1 fan in pull due to space restrictions. I still see a delta T of around 7C when rad fans are fixed at 1050 rpm. Granted for the 420 and 360 I'm using ho-hum Corsair SP120/140 LED fans, and my 980 Ti doesn't run over 33-38C under load depending on ambient, but just proves no such thing as "overkill".

(my main goal was to keep a heavily overclocked 980 Ti below 40C while gaming, and so far so good. But summer will be the real test ;))

In all seriousness though, a single 480 would be all you need with quiet (~1200 RPM) fans. You're just about right for a near silent setup (~600 RPM) fans.

I can tell you one thing: I have two Titan X and a Xeon on one UT60 360 and I'm wishing I had room for another 360. Its quiet enough, but temps do crawl up a bit.

What case are you using? I initially had my X79 build in the Enthoo Luxe, but ditched it for the Enthoo Primo after 2 weeks. So very glad I made that decision, as the Enthoo Primo is just all around better for everything.

Push/pull with Gentle Typhoons yet? Gotta admit I was a non-believer until I got some AP-14s and AP-15s. The Corsair SP fans become quite audible past 1000 rpm, and at full blast (1300-1500 rpm) they simply ROAR. With the Gentle Typhoons, they're barely audible even at 1400 rpm, and I could definitely run them 24/7 like that. No way I'd ever crank a Corsair SP fan like that unless I absolutely needed the cooling power.

To OP: Nobody is ever gonna complain about having too much space in their case (unless they bought it by accident/for the wrong build), but we already have one person wishing they had more room for radiators. (sorry Kazeo :p) So again, no such thing as overkill (unless it starts hurting your wallet).

This. The noise/performance ratio on the typhoons is amazing.

I have the exact same setup as OP (my brother).

I'll post some pics this afternoon.

Here are some pictures of my brother (OP) and I's setups. Probably weighs like 100lbs LOL
Triple and double 140s at bottom and quad 120 up top.

There is no doubt you have way more cooling than you need.... but as long as your pump can push it, you can never have too much!

Sounds a lot like my system:
5930K @ 4.5ghz (Heatkiller 3.0)
980Ti @ `1500ghz (EVGA hydro)
Rampage 5 Extreme chipset+vreg blocks (Watercool)
dual 655's in series
Watercool MORA3 (9x140) radiator

I just stepped down from dual GTX580's and an old i7 920 that produced much more heat. I do anticipate adding another 980Ti or going to a multi-GPU setup again in the future, but for now I just don't need it. With the old setup, I could run the radiator without any fans most of the time. Under load (video games), I would have to turn on the one fan that cools the radiator. The new setup barely gets the water in the loop hot enough to warrant me turning on the fan on the radiator even under load. So, if you want to reduce your system's noise or reduce the amount of dust that it collects and recirculates, you could use your "radiator overkill" situation to run your system with more passive cooling.
