Is my hard drive dead?

Last night my hard drive crashed. I distinctly heard the drive stop spinning, and a blue screen of death came up with the following message:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

and this error code:

***STOP: 0x000000ED (0x86F4BAEO, 0x00000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I've troubleshot through a number of my usual procedures, but it has essentially stayed the same. The computer will get to the windows screen with the green bar, I will hear the hard drive stop spinning, and the computer won't boot. [Note: I can boot into safe mode, but I can't start windows normally.]

I'm pretty sure the drive is dead, but I just wanted to be sure before I bought a new one. Thoughts?

well if you can run it in safe mode, its not the drive. maybe a conflict, a virus or something.
my hard drive was doing something similar, did a format and all is good.
