Is my display dying?

I may have just not noticed this before - but I've been doing a lot of graphics work lately that envolves reference images that are in black and white - and I notice that whenever I switch windows that I can still see the reference image as if it's "burnt" into the screen. Gradually it fades. Is this usual, or is this a sign my display is dying? It's almost a year old. It's the 2001FPW from dell.

'Image persistence' can occur with LCDs where an image will look as if it is burned in. The fix, i've heard, is to put up an all white background for a few hours.

I do not know if some LCDs are more prone to it than others. How long does it stay? How often does it happen?

It usually doesn't stay for any longer than 30 seconds or so. It happens as often as I have one of the said images on dispaly - I assume it has something to do with the bright white background being on the screen for so long. I've also noticed that my curser has been leaving a trail recently - not a huge deal in of itself, but the fact that I noticed it worries me. I've owned this display for a little under a year and never noticed my mouse having a trail until now.

Why not try skittzles suggestion of throwing up an all white screen for a few hours to see if it corrects the issue you notice?

I realize that it's been a while since I started this post, but I'd just like to add that I left an all white screen on my monitor all last night while I slept, and it didn't do anything to fix the issue.

For instance, my background has two large all white letters - even if they're on screen for only a minute, I can bring up a website or another image, and the outline for the letters still remains for a while. It's not serious, just enough to make me paranoid about my display - is this usual of LCD screens, or should I contact Dell for a replacement?

Hmm....A quick search on the Dell site says the 2005FP was replaced with the 2007WFP? I wonder if my replacement will be the newer one.....It seems to be slightly better with back light issues etc, right?

Good god. Dell makes this so much harder than it should be.

I talk with some rep who has no idea what they're doing - they give me a link to a wikki page on image persistance and tell me that I'm getting it because I'm leaving a static image on the screen for extended periods of time. Which I'm not - any image with bright colors displayed for even as little as a minute will persist sometimes 30 seconds or more. Even the cursor is leaving a trail now, previusly it was not. She goes on to tell me to turn my monitor off and run the Dell Diagnostics built into the monitor, at which point I tell her that I'm currently on said monitor and as such would not reccomend shutting it off. Then I get disconnected. Lovely. Now I have to go through all that again.

To make issues even more fun, I can't call tech support over the phone, or even chat online, because both require a service tag, and Dell, in all their glory, didn't think enough of my monitor to give it a service tag. So I have a piece of hardware that has no service tag that I cannot get service for directly without...........a service tag. What a bunch of BS.

Edit: Just got off the phone after holding for an hour. The person I reached told me that since I didn't have a service number, that I needed to insert the barcode number on the back of my monitor in it's place - tried that and Dell said that it was not a service tag number.

I've been on this for hours. I give up. Screw Dell, I won't be buying from them anymore.

Oh god. After all that, they send me......a refurbished monitor as my replacement. Refurbished? Is this common Dell practice? C'man. I want a new product, not a previously defective, used and repaired monitor

Did you get a 2001FPW as a replacement? I'm not suprised that it isn't new, since they don't make that model any more. It is probably somewhere in your service agreement that they don't have to give you a new model once the one you have goes out of production.

Yeah. I was hoping that since they didn't make it anymore, I would get the model that replaced it. Guess not. Oh well. I'm still not happy I got a freaking refurbished item as a replacement. I went through customer support, tech support, and then a manager and nobody wanted to help.

If you read dells policy. You get a new product only for something like 30 days. After that, all bets are off, you definitely get a refurb if they have them.

I have heard of this persistance problem with LCDs, seems fairly common and it is likely that your replacement does it to.

Well, regardless of the fact that you got a refurbished, how is it performing? Do you notice the same problem?

[offtopic]I once had to get a motherboard replaced due to it dying, ended up getting sent a refurb, it had no problems and has been working fine for more than 1.5 years now. [/offtopic]
