Is my CPU the bottleneck?

Well, since I got my new X850XT, I have been wondering if my CPU is getting old. Its a 2.8 GHz Prescott with 512KB of L2 cache. What do you guys think I should run it at to take advantage of the X850XT? I was thinking 3.2-3.4, but I wanted to get some opinions.

I would just push it as high as it'll go while maintaining safe temps. If you still feel its bottlenecking, up the eye candy some.

yes, run it at 3.4ghz 24/7 in order to eliminate most of that cpu bottleneck.

Increasing your resolution will help taking stree off the CPU and onto your video card. Try increasing some settings, but make sure they're playable. Overclocking will also help.

What are acceptable temps? I'll be getting some AS5 to slap on there, so those shouldn't be too bad. What AS5 version should I buy: The ceramique or normal? Also, what's a good temp monitoring tool?

Bottlenecking depends on the game that your playing. If you're playing UT2004 you're probably fine. If you're playing BF2 then you may have some bottlenecking. Overclocking your processor will help. Even if your processor is acting as a bottleneck, a faster video card will probably still give you a performance increase. The drawback is that your performance increase will not be a great as if you had a faster processor.

My 3.0 GHz Prescott has been playing games all perfect and purdy with my X850XT PE. :)

yeah, but the question is, can it play the games quicker and prettier? :p

If 40FPS at 1280x1024 in F.E.A.R. isn't quick, then I guess not...

I have a 2.8c (northwood) and upgraded from a 9800 Pro to a x850 xt. I was wondering the same thing. When I overclock to 3.5 (250 FSB, 5:4 ram timings)I see some pretty good increases...
Aquamark went from 62,569 to 72,116....
3d Mark 03 went from 11,974 to 12,646...
3d Mark 05 went from 5549 to 6133....

Looks to me like a faster CPU would really help out. I think running my ram on 5:4 timings isn't helping either.
