Is it true...

That the X800XT-PE with proper cooling(nitrogen) and clocked to almost 1GHZ core clocks can outperform a 6800Ultra SLI system?

I have been hearing rumors from my friends and on the internet...anyone know anything about it?

I do not think that is true the artifacts the u would get on the screen would be crazy!

I was meaning stable clocks, because nitrogen cooling is crazy! My friend had told me this after sending me a link and I read about and saw screenshots, but unfortunately I lost the links.

I believe with the right cooling almost any oc is possible. I wouldn't doubt that it could. Just the money that would be going into the cooling would be insane.

The 6800 can't overclock as well as a X800XTPE ive heard. and therfore can't reach such high clock speeds.

somebody try it. It sure would make for a good mod thread.

So somebody do it. Somebody with a lot of extra time and a lot of extra money. We sure would appreciate it.

two 6800U in SLI w/ nitrogen cooling---break that 50,000 3dmark05 score.

This has already been discussed a LONG TIME ago. No... even MACCI's X800XTPE cannot overtake 2 6800Ultra's in SLI. And SLI on phase-change..... check Futuremark. It's been done and the scores are insane. Nothing canbe done to the X800XT to catch those WR.

Even if it could, clock speed means nothing. Clock for clock cycles the Nvidia GPU does more per cycle so the dont have to clock to higher to insane rates. Clocking a 6800Ultra GPU is different. Smaller clocks yeild the same as ultra high clocks on the ATI cards. Kinda like the Diff between AMD and Intel. Its about efficentcy. But there is no way that a X800XT PE could ever beat 2 6800Ultra's in SLI. Thats been proven no matter how much you freeze the ATI card.

From what I've heard, extreme cooling on NV4x's is useless. The core is supposedly designed to shutdown if it becomes too cold.

At a core speed of 1ghz I'm guessing that it would be very close to the performance of non-overlocked SLI'd Ultras. Though I'm never been one hit that high of a core clock (closest I think is around 750ish). But by looking at the "Post your 3DMark 05...." thread you will see that a X800 clocked around 6500 core is *only* about 3000 marks behind two SLI GT rigs. I'm guessing with another 350mhz core increase that the X800 could at least come damn close to matching it. When talking about games though, at those speeds I would think a CPU bottleneck would limit us right now from trying it.

You'd probably struggle to see your monitor past the nitrogen cooling equipment as well.

Lol, that would be very true. I'm not saying its going to happen (I truly doubt the core could reach that without some artifacting or some serious amazing cooling) but at those speeds I do believe it would be close. Oh well, I doubt we'll ever get to see it.

Phase-change is possible on 6800 Ultras.... the freeze problem can be bypassed. There wouldn't be insane SLI numbers if it couldn't.

But, all hardware reaches limits of current and power that can be put through it, and the load it can handle, no matter the temperature. This is why you can't take a P2 200 and kick it to 3 Ghz on nitrogen. The architecture simply won't support that much voltage and power. The core on the XT PE's will eventually reach limits, even at -220 degrees Celcius. It's all a matter of efficiency, power usage, the solidness of the architecture, and so on.

Just did a little quick math...

Highest 3dmark05 score for an X800XT-PE is 8606 running at 822/1302 on a 2801mhz A64.

Highest score for SLI 6800u's is 12634 (605/1386 on an A64 at 3108).

Looking at some of the scores for X800XT-PE's at default clocks on a 2800-2850mhz A64 PC it looks like around 5400 is the sort of score you could reasonable expect with a good PC (i.e, good RAM and such, like the heavy OC'ers use).

I know these things don't scale exactly this way, but I'm just trying to make an estimate SO..... Using the 5400 as a base score, then figuring the percentage score gain going to 822, then continuing that ratio up to 1000 on the core, I came up with a projected score for the 1ghz X800XT-PE of.....

~10800

Not nearly enough to catch up to the SLI 6800u's score of 12634.

However, on the positive side, I am betting the x800XT-PE will still be more reliable and put out more vibrant colors.

(That last part is just my opinion based on having an x800XT-PE which has never failed me in any way in any game, and having a 6800Ultra that I've used on the same system in 4 games, and having had problems in 3 of those games (1 serious problem with MOHAA:pacific Assault, 1 minor problem in Half-life 2, 1 minor problem in Everquest 2, and no problems in NFSU 2) (and it's not a driver issue, I know how to change card drivers, been a PC gaming freak for 14 years).

But didnt you just do that match with the SLI's having a 300 Mhz CPU advantage, then you must include RAM and other differences in the system......

1000 MHz on the core of an X800XT PE? How about NO, you crazy Dutch bastard! (Dr. Evil)

Anyways, that core clock would be freaking diriculous. Impossible actually. And I will take it back when someone posts a benchmark that says otherwise.

Just thought I would point that out. 800+ on the core is already FREAKING CRAZY!

pretty hypothetical discussion... but point is well made - u need a really crazy oc on ATI hardware just to match nvidia's power of SLI :D

But you're also spending twice the money.

What is the highest OC for two GT or Ultra's in SLI? I'd love to see those run through some games!

SLI don't always beat the xt pe in actual games. SLI only works in some games and is actualy slower than 1 6800u all by it's lonesome in certain games. SLI is great tech though, hopefully they will get it to work in more games in the coming months..

No u don't - instead of second videcard, u spent a bunch of money on setting up a crazy cooling system (liquid nitrogen etc)
