i need to get a good reading so i know how much i can lower my fan controller.

No, that will keep your heatsink from making proper contact with the core. What processor are you using?
 
You can drill a hole for a tiny thermistor through (or partly through would be better) the bottom plate of the heat sink from the top and fit the thermistor in thermal compound. You must deburr the hole if you drill right through the heat sink.

never hered of this procedure done.. can you show me documentation.. this sounds good but i wana see someone who has done it
