Is drivepool ok as a backup?

So I have 8 HDD's as one large drive. I configured the drivepool program to duplicate and protect from multiple drive failures. And also set up with three copies. So is that a decent set up for a main backup?

I use crashplan as a secondary.
 
no. RAID is NOT a backup, ever.

crashplan is the backup, drivepool just assures you don't lose your data if you lose a drive. Afterall, something can still come along and kill several drives at once. Like say the psu going out and spiking all of your drives. Lightning hitting and taking everything out, etc..

the long and the short of it: crashplan is the backup, make sure you have everything important being backed up that way.

That's not why drivepool isn't a backup. Something is not a backup if it only represents one copy of the data. It doesn't matter if there is parity or mirroring. Even with parity or mirroring it is still only "one copy".

An easy way to test whether or not a set of data is a single copy or not is to delete a file from it. Can you recover that file? If not, then that data has NO backup. Mirroring does not allow you to recover a deleted file because the file is deleted from the mirror at the same time that its deleted from the primary. Thus even though there are physically 2 copies, you cannot treat them as 2, you must treat them as 1.

Drivepool could be a backup to some other primary data source. If you are backing up the data on your desktop or laptop to your drivepool server then yes it's a backup.

A backup needs to keep deleted files and also needs to perform versioning of your files so that way if a file is deleted or corrupted then it is not also deleted or corrupted in your backup. So you can restore the deleted file or restore an uncorrupted older version of the file.

Crashplan does do all of these things nicely.
