Is a hdd fixable?

I have two hard drives that are not working, both of them recognized by the mobo but one of them is not recognized by the OS when is about to be installed and the other you can installed the OS up to a certain point and then it freezes. Can they be fixed? or should I file 13 on them?
 
I bet they are fixable.. but it might be not cost effective to get them fixed.. as for doing it yourself - try low level formatting..
 
What can i use for this low level formatting? So I can try it cause I'm not paying for getting them fix.

my 20 gig western Digital did the same thing to me not long ago during a os install...if the drive locked up during the install..its junk...remove the drives..and check the #s on them,...then either email..or goto that sites support page..and check to see if the drives r still under warrenty
 
Not necesarily... I had a similar install problem on one of my systems a while back, but I ended up tracing the real problem back to the memory. Sure did make it look like it was the drive though. Might want to find some type of HD bench program to verify the problems. Also, depending on the drive, manufacturer, and purchase date, there's always the RMA route.

One of them is a Maxtor 60gb and the other one is a WD Caviar 2.1gb

Now a friend of mine just said to me to fdisk the hdd's to try to fix it.
 
This program has worked for me a couple times in the past. Might be worth a shot.. Although replacing a 60gb drive is prolly cheaper than trying to replace it.

im on my 3rd one of these after rma'ing 2 of them. the one i have now is an rma, for an rma, on the original drive. maxtor drives are terrible, and the only thing worse then a maxtor drive is the refurbished piece of shit that they send back when you rma.
 
I know that is what i heard from other people. this is the first and last one I buy and to make it worst is not under warranty no more. :mad:
 
unfortunatly i will probobly be buying another maxtor. im thinking of getting a 120gb ide drive for my ps2. maxtor drives seem to work best in ps2's
 
Arock..you maxtor might have come with a Max blast cd...install that..run the program and see if it see's your hd..and if theres any problems with it..ive built umteen systems in my day..and my experience has taught me..if your hd locks or wont install windows..chances are your hd is no good
