Hey,

I just got a brand new comp.. =D I used MemTest for the memory, that checks out, now I'd like to see if there are any problems w/ the proc. I can't seem to find a program that will check to see if any of the four cores are dead. Is there one out there? Thanks.
 
If you have the CPU in your possession, none of the cores are dead. Intel thoroughly tests their chips before releasing them, so if they did end up with one that had a duff core, they would dispose of it.

However, if you really want to test the cores, you can download a program like Orthos or IntelBurnTest, run it, and then go into Task Manager and assign the process to only one of the cores at a time. It wouldn't really be worth the effort though.
 
The CPU either works or it doesn't. If there are manufacturing defects, intel will disable that core completely with another process and sell it as a different model chip.

What you receive you have nothing to worry about.
 
The newest version of Prime95 can do multi-core CPU's. No need to even go in and manually assign affinity. If there is a problem with any of the cores, an error will be generated. But like Zero said, not really worth the efford, unless you're overclocking and want to test for stability. IIRC, both Orthos and IntelBurnIn also do multi-core as well, Orthos up to dual I believe.

Well the person you got it from came from intel...

The thing that you should be scared about and can't tell is whether the last person OC'd this CPU. If he was dumping massive amounts of power into this chip, that could have caused damage to the transistors (reducing the life span).

But either way, it looks like you OC'd it no problem. I personally run Orthos w/ small FFT's to check for stability.
