trying to make a comp and i only have around $900 dollars to spend so my firends tell me to try to make a budget comp and i thought you could make a good one with 900 bucks.
Am i worng?
is everything that expensive?
all i want to do is be able to have good fps in my games and some room on my hard drive.
if it is possible to make a good 900 dollar gaming machine, does anyone have any recommenations on specific parts?

thx

Hell yes it's possible!

XP-M 2500 == $80ish?
DFI NF2 == $100ish?
1GB of good ram == $160ish?
80GB HD == $75ish?
9800Pro == $200ish?

I didn't feel like opening another browser for NewEgg, anyway, if you go with AMD Mobiles it will be real cheap, I'd say 600-700 bucks would get you a secksi ass machine.

However, if you want to go with like an A64? then your budget may be a little low. I don't know anything about A64's or their costs, since I know I can't afford them :p

OR you can go the P4 route, I'd suggest either a 2.4C or a 2.8C :D

Agreed, this is a very similar system to what I have and I know I didn't spend $900 on it ;)

You should be able to get a really nice computer setup with $900, maybe you will have some cash left over for misc. goodies :)

An nforce2 mobo like an Asus A7N8X line or NF7-S mobo are also nice, you might want to look into those. CoRPS didn't mention it but I am sure he recommended a 2500m because they are known to be very good overclockers.

Well, good luck with your new system :)

I just got a 35 watt XP-M & ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard for $86 each from Newegg. Here's a parts list for you: :D

Case:
ANTEC Solution Series Mid Tower Case with 300W Power Supply, Model "SLK2600AMB"

Memory:
Kingston ValueRAM Dual Kits 184 Pin 512MB(256MBx2) DDR PC-3200

Motherboard:
ASUS "A7N8X-E Deluxe" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard

CPU:
Mobile 35 Watt AMD Athlon XP-M 2200+

DVD-RW Drive:
NEC 8X Black Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Drive, Model ND-2510A BLK, OEM BULK

Hard Drive:
Seagate 120GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model ST3120026AS, OEM

Subtotal » $487.99

Leaving you about $500 for mouse, keyboard, video card, speakers...

Please ask if you have any questions regarding any of those choices. I assure you, you will not be dissapointed. Overclock the CPU to at least 11 x 200 = 3200+, oh, and pickup a TR2 M3 heatsink at Micro Center for $9.99, forget about $30+ heatsinks for now...

Not only are the mobiles great overclockers, but they require less volts, which means lower temps, which means better performance :D

I have a XP-M 2400, get the 2500 to look cool, but the 2400 will do just as much as the 2500's. Also, the mobiles all have 512 L2 Cache.

I'm bored, so let me try my hand at this :D

$852.48 So far.

Eek... monitor's gonna cost a bit. So did you want it with or without monitor? That's basically everything WITHOUT monitor and it'd be a kickass system. Ram is DDR400 and Mobiles are unlocked from factory. And extremely overclockable from factory aswell. I bet you can hit 12x200 no problem. 2400MHz, a gig of ram and a 9800Pro would be extremely fun in Doom 3. WIth a DVDBurner and a cordless keyboard/mouse combo....

My list is better :p $20 more for 50% more hard drive space, 35 watt vs 45 watt CPU, ASUS brand MB - does the shuttle have firewire & SATA RAID? I agree with the case choice, definately... Well, I have been reading that the A7N8X-E Deluxe is not the best for "extreme" overclocking, but, I bet it will run fast and stable, and, you don't want to try to go much over 400/200 Mhz FSB with basic PC3200 RAM anyway... Biege or black, either way, you can't go wrong with the NEC 2510A, except, I'm reading people saying it's a great writer, but sometimes has reading problems?

I got one of those CPUs (35 watt) today and I'm running Prime95 on it presently at 2 Ghz, it's peaked up at 47 degrees (C) with my $9.99 TR2-M3 heatsink, isn't that good enough? How much cooler will it be with the Zalman?

well, I had my XP-M 2400+ at 2.4Ghz running at 39C on load. And that was with some shitty compound.

OP, do u need a monitor, kb/mouse? If you don't, then u can easily build one for less than 600.
