Interesting Devils Canyon Article

How much money could they possibly save by doing this instead of the solder? I have no intention of going BACK to the days of strapping a giant block of metal to a bare die.

What amazes me is that Intel knows there is an issue with the TIM they used for Haswell, so what do they do? They use a different shitty TIM, rebrand the processor, put a new name on it and then let their marketing department run with it.

How hard can it be for a company the size of Intel to just use a better TIM? I mean, even if it cost $5 more per CPU, I'd gladly buy one knowing that it can overclock well and will have less heat issues.

It's just getting silly. What we really need is more competition in the CPU industry like the golden days (aka Celeron 300a, etc.).

Honestly they market the overclockability, but so they really want consumers to get extra performance out of a chip at no extra cost? Think about it.

They know overclocking sells chips to enthusiasts, but they also know a select few will pony up change for the higher clocked chips.

So they completely benefit by having chips that can overclock, but not very well do to something very cheap and simple... the TIM.

That's why we need competition. Intel can pretty much do as they please since AMD is no real threat to their markets. Basically Intel is just competing with themselves these days and not doing a good job of it.

Consumer market is primarily in mobile, and on that front, they've been competing with themselves quite well. They've got business and enterprise cornered (the big money makers, $3k+ CPUs), and those are on regular update cycles.

The only thing AMD competition would benefit really is just enthusiasts... which is the general makeup of this forum, but less than 10% of the consumer market.

well said... AMD has to step up and make a cpu worth a shit so intel can have competition again..
