Intels new naming system

I heard that intel (and i think AMD) plan to start advertising CPUs by numbers rather than CPU speed. For example a 3.2C could be called a P4 550 and a 3.0C could be called a P4 500...

when will this switch happen?

Yeah, they will have a naming scheme, where you could figure out most of the cpu's features from the name, such as relative speed, revision, cache size, etc. It's just like reading the code off the IHS... :D. Well, if you know what that code means.

It has already started. The new Dothan Pentium M's are 7xx.

I think it's a stupid idea. I've talked to many borderline computer people who have been put off from buying AMD products because of the stupid numbering scheme. Now it seems like Intel is going the same route.

And in case anyone notices the similarities....Intel did pattern the new numbers after BMWs system. 3xx, 5xx, 7xx, and so on.

This new naming system is worse than the whole A, B, C, E P4 naming convention.

A 7xx is P4EE or Pentium M.
A 5xx is Pentium 4 and Pentium 4-M.
A 3xx is Celeron and Celeron-M.

I'd rather have my P4C 2.4 or 3.0 rather than a Intel 520 whatever. They need a better scheme.

I like the naming scheme...it will just take some getting used to....and eventually you gotta think that its gonna start getting almost impossible to actually clock the CPUs acurately because theyre getting so fast.....this is in the distant future....but overall Im gonna like the new naming.

Well, intel say's it's gonna gonna keep things like processor speed a secret.. you can still get all the specs when you're buying..

^^^LOL.. i don't know if i'm for or against it.. but yeah.. its' interesting to see the company that pushed the mega hertz myth do this..

a small part in my heart for intel just died.

like AMD's, its for idiots who cant keep cache and FSB separate. itll order what is faster than what.

I run an AMD cause i'm to poor to go intel.. lol but yeah.. actually i don't completly dig the whole 3000+ garbage..but it's not bad.. i mean it's easy to find the FSB and cache and stuff like that...

Doesn't it seem like they're gonna run out of numbers fast? Each class has only 100 numbers, and they seem to go up by large leaps, eg. 500, 520. If they want this to last, they need to go 501, 502.

Maybe they'll start taking on letters, like 755 S Class, or 323 I class. Now you just opened up 26 more possiblities for each number!

Trust me, im sure they have all THAT planned out... eitehr that or intel really has some serious shit on teh shelf because they aren't coming out with all that many new procs...

Well I think it does makes more sense because HIGHER clockspeeds doesn't mean it's FASTER. For example I know alot of people that would pick a Celeron 2.8ghz over a Pentium4 2.0ghz because they think it's faster. I also think that Intel is thinking long term here, they know that you aren't gonna keep having higher and higher clockspeeds on new chips, at least not at the rate they have increased in the past 20 years or so.

well I guess this new scheme is to prevent ppl from confusing themselves. When the first Centrino CPUs came out, ppl would go for P4m, i.e 1.8Ghz rather than Centrinos 1.4Ghz, which in fact are relatively same speed

Next thing you'll know they will be selling Intel Pentium series 723 Type 'R'...

Edit: Bling Bling, Kekekekekeke ^____________________^;~~

I prefer actually MHz not performance ratio thing. 2500+, 3000+ etc. too confusing for me. gimme the Mhz #'s.

No they won't keep anything a secret ... this is just a branding thing. Everyone on HardOCP will still know exactly what they're buying. BMW doesn't exactly hide their numbers for horse power, they just don't emblaze it on the back of the car.
