Intel SSD Bad Performance?

I just bought my first SSD, It is a intel 320 80gb, and I have been very less then impressed. Here are some benchmarks that i took. Is this normal?

Update, I figured out that the problem was the driver it had automatically installed because i had plugged it into a sata 2 port instead of a sata 3 port.

now getting about 257 read mb/s and about the same Read mb/s.
 
For comparison's sake, here's what my 80GB Intel 320 is giving me using the same settings:

Benching is pretty useless, but benching with 50MB sample size is totally useless.

Benching isn't useless. If he hadn't benched the SSD he wouldn't have known he hooked it up wrong now would he?


I agree with you on the 50MB sample though, I just used it because that's what he was did for some reason.
 
Benchmarking can help you figure out if your SSD is working right.
 
I won't have access to my machine until next year, but I know for a fact that AHCI is enabled on it. The only explanation I can think of is that is a larger drive in the review (at least the first review), and that they're using the default settings instead of 50 Mbyte.

Run atto bench. Should give some results to help answer your question.
 
You should get 256MBs reads with SATA II. I believe you should do some initial benching, but not excessive runs. I typically run AnvilPro Beta 9 and CrystalDiskMark 5x1000MBs or 5x500MB. CrystalDiskMark, especially 5x1000, does write quite a bit to the drive.

I have a Samsung 830 64GB which was quite fast initially, but I encountered a low performance state from which the drive could not recover through Secure Erasing or other methods. Now, I didn't need benchmarking to figure out that the drive was slow, but the ability to quantify the performance loss is helpful in trying to figure out what the hell is going on.
 
Atto is helpful if you think you may be having problems, but I don't find it very useful as a performance indicator. CrystalDiskMark uses 5 runs by 1000MBs at default settings, but it throws out the all but the best run for each category. AS-SSD is somewhat like CDM, except it returns averages.

Understanding the benchmark you're running and how it reflects performance is mandatory.


The OP bench numbers are hard to figure with it's 50MB sizes x 1 repetition. That's going to be useless.

At least do 5x100MBs or 5x500MBs.
 
Benchmarking my SSD is how I found out OCZ shafted me with the less reliable 25nm nand drive. It's a stretch to say it's useless. (maybe Oldie can permaban Aesma?)
 
I said pretty useless, but I was above all referring to benching for the purpose of benching, which some people do, and far too much.

Of course an initial bench to see if all is well is not a problem, that is, unless it is performed incorrectly.

You're right, good thing they're helping me diagnose my drive now instead. Not sure you read the whole thread...
