Intel is expected to announce today that it is open-sourcing its Threading Building Blocks 2.0 software. Intel’s TBB 2.0 software is a C++ runtime library that simplifies the development of software applications running in parallel.

"Intel Threading Building Blocks 2.0 is a C++ runtime library that simplifies threading for performance and scalability. It is a higher-level abstraction that requires less code for threading and delivers multicore performance. It is ready today for the multicore architectures of tomorrow," said James Reinders.

You'd think that would be a total no-brainer. Introducing multiprocessor systems on a large scale is all well and good, but if no one codes for it you've laid the equivalent of a gold plated turd. Intel should have been encouraging developers with tools like this from day one, especially considering they're in the business of making chipsets, processors, and assorted hardware far more than software.
Hopefully this will encourage more development among freeware coders for the (semi) new chips, forcing a faster move on the part of big business to compete.
