According to DigiTimes, Intel is planning to launch a new desktop processor for its upcoming Skulltrail motherboard.

The quad-core Core 2 Extreme QX9775 has frequency of 3.2GHz, supports 1600MHz FSB, and uses the server-based socket 771. Pricing will be US$1,499, according to the sources. The new CPU is based on an Intel Xeon server processor and Intel will use SMP technology enable to Skulltrail to support up to two quad-core CPUs for enthusiast players in the desktop market, according to the sources.

It's interesting to see that Intel is going to be raising the prices of the `extreme edition' CPUs this time around.

I never thought I'd say this, but how could any regular consumer/gamer ever utilize all that power. That is 8 cores @ 3.2Ghz Stock. Um.....

idk, i got a q6600 running at 3.2 and i know i will never use all its processing power.... What would someone do with 8 cores...:p

think beyond gaming, 8 cores will be useful to for encodes, take like 1 min now :D

Let's hope AMD somehow manages to come up with something competitive or it may become the norm for all their CPU's.Call me a pessimist, but without real competition, there's nothing to keep them from becoming the Intel of old.:(

If 8 cores seems wasteful today it will become retarded tomorrow.

Remember when dual cores came out? Most jacks were screaming how useless and overpowered they were! Oh, who needs dual cores? I will never use 2 cores! yea yea...

My philosophy is get the best you can get for your money and if it's overpowered for you today it won't be tomorrow.

Well in the gaming arena we have yet to get a game that fully utilizes 4 cores, with another 4 we are reaching the boundaries of over paying for something that will never be used, good to see its based on the xeon if this were to come out advertised for gamers it would be a huge waste, $1500 for a 300mhz OC? uhh... i'll take the few steps smaller for half the price and OC it for nearly the same result.

thats what happens when there is no competition. i hope AMD stays in business at least enough to keep the lower end to midrange CPU prices down

At least server purchasers won't be pissed like they were with the original "Extreme Edition" release. Back then, the EE processors were identical to the Xeons of the time, at half the price.

This time around, the EE processor costs *MORE* for what I'm 99% certain is the exact same processor, even down to the socket. (There is no pricing info for the 3.2 GHz processor yet, but the 3.0 GHz one will be only around $1000. Intel usually doesn't put a 50% premium on the top-end server chips the way they do on desktop chips.)

I hope Intel "fixes" the memory situation before launch, although I imagine it's too late now. They really need to just put dual-channel DDR3-1600 on instead of FB-DIMMs, if they're aiming at "enthusiasts" rather than servers. (Hell, dual-channel DDR3-1600 has theoretical higher bandwidth than quad-channel FB-DIMMs even at this new platform's 800 MHz, because of FB-DIMM's overhead. And when you get in to real-world numbers, it gets even worse for FB-DIMMs. Although there are rumors that the new chipset will have much better latency than the old ones.)

I believe Supreme Commander will utilize them all, though it's one of the few, if only, games that will. Having said that though, you can do other things in the background, such as encoding a video while you play your game.
