Why do they have twentyseven (27) core i5's just for laptops?
Not to count the core i7's and i3's (43 and 20 respectively), and on top of that six i7 extreme. That's 96 different CPU's for laptops!:eek:

How can I classify them and choose a suitable one without putting in some serious hours/days into research?
Can anyone direct me to a list where all these CPU's are classified by performance, battery time features and whatnot? (not www.cpubenchmark.net please)
Or better yet, a breakdown here at [H].

start with what you have now, there are 3 different generations and the 2nd and 3rd are not compatible with the first. there are 2 different sockets, G1 and G2. So start with what you have or what you are looking at, and then you can narrow down what is compatible with the laptop you have or what laptop you are looking at.

another thing to think about is if your laptop even has a socket to be able to upgrade, your processor may be soldered in.

oh, you should figure out the chipset too, chipset will narrow down the CPU list and tell you what is compatible with your laptop.

Includes Arrandale, Sandy Bridge, and Ivy Bridge. Arrandale had 18W and 35W variants to fit every price range. Sandy bridge had 17W and 35W variants. Ivy bridge has like 14W and 35W variants I think.

So for the 27 i5's you mentioned, that is only about 4 low power and 4 high power variants of the i5 for each generation.

kink in the tracks, i have an i5-540m that is rated at 25w in my work computer!

The ark.intel.com site is great for helping you find the specs on your processor or looking up processors. For performance based ranking the best that I have seen is on anandtech.com and they have a number of different performance benchmarks to give you an idea on how your processor stacks up agianst other processors for that given task.

All I know is the I7-3720QM in my laptop is beast. It is as fast if not faster than an I7-2600K especially at quicksync tasks.
