Came across this article where E5200 overclocking potential is briefly examined.


Intel had been switching all its products to its latest 45nm manufacturing process, you may wonder when the low-end CPUs will get 45nm refreshment.

And the answer is, now. Today, I’m gonna show you one big chip that will become the talk of the town in the coming months, a brand new low-end processor from Intel, made by 45 nanometer technology, in the name of “Intel Pentium Dual Core E5×00″. If you got confused by its name, just remember the shorter title it carries “A replacement while enhancer to E21×0″.

The E5200 manages to hit a Prime95 stable overclock of 3.6Ghz. And a SuperPi 32M tested 4.0Ghz overclock at a bit higher voltage. Looks very promising, especially since this was done using the stock cooler on a rather ho hum setup. Can't wait to see the full review from all the usual sites.
 
Nice, if these come in <=$100, I'm all over it for the 2nd rig (currently E2180).
 
Intel set the price at $84. I'm sure we'll see that within the first week or two afer release. BTW, the info for the article was taken from this thread if anyone wants to read through or follow along.
 
Thought these would be out by now (or at least officially announced). Oh well, I was gonna pair one up with a MCP7A based motherboard. Those won't be out for at least another month and I would rather wait 1~2 months after it comes out before buying one.
 
i'm buying one just for ocing purposes ... actually buying a whole rig just to oc
 
so I just noticed an older post by renethx over at avsforum about an Intel price list. It states August 31st for the E5200 launch.
 
Very sweet headroom for a budget chip. 4GHz at 1.5v on a Wolfdale isn't a particularly good idea for long-term operation though. Nevertheless, this will still beat the crap out of every other sub-$100 CPU.
 
how would this stand up to an e8400 (at stock 3ghz) overclocked @ the same speed?

More than that,

it's about 8-10% slower from E7200 vs E8400 at the same clock speed and 15% slower with cache dependent apps,

it's going to be a bit slower than the E7200

There is a 0 - 14% difference between 3MB and 6MB L2, with the average difference being 5%. Most of the big gains come from low res gaming though, at higher 'real world' resolutions the difference would be less due to GPU limitations kicking in.

So I guess my initial 5% estimate was a little low (if you include low res gaming), but there shouldn't be much difference between 2MB to 3MB (1 - 2%) if 3MB to 6MB only increases performance by 5% on average. So maybe 6 - 7% slower per clock if you wanna get picky. :p

yea, the retail E7200 is $100 at Microcenter. Official launch isn't till next Sunday the 31st. I think it should be in the $80 range within two weeks or so
 
Official price (1000 units) for the E7200 is $113 and the E5200 is $84, so it should end up around $30 cheaper than the E7200 once the price settles.
