Intel dropping ATX next year

I'm all for this seeing what the OEMs are doing with their BTX solutions. The current Dell PCs are whisper quiet even with 8xx Pentium D processors. Great cooling solutions, it will be nice when we as consumers can buy nicely designed cases by major manufactures (Antec, Silverstone, Lian-Li, ect.) that support this form factor.

Antec looks like they have a decent one available now.

Where are all the BTX is dead posts in the general hardware :p

I have enojyed the OEM BTX pcs I have seen recently, and will probablly buy a BTX capable case next
 
Argh...I hate you Intel...making my case obsolete already. I don't see the point of moving over to BTX, Conroe's consume less power than Intel's current processors and supposdly less than AMD's A64s which have fared perfectly well with ATX cases../ :eek: :mad:

I do not see ATX dying off quickly, I think it will take a long period probablly 3-5 years or so before BTX is the only thing. However, it has been a long time coming since ATX has been the standard for over 10 years now.
 
As far as ATX not dying off quickly, I think the opposite will hold true. If Intel is going BTX only in 2007, by sheer volume alone the mobo kids won't have a helluva lot of choice but to switch to BTX, in which case the case industry will follow suit. BTX was always about a slow transition, and OEM's have had BTX goodies for a couple of years now (Gateway being the first, if memory serves). 2 years is an eternity in this industry, as I'm sure you know.

My question is, with Conroe goodness upon us (relatively speaking), and the announcement of Intel abandoning ATX in less than a year, can I safely assume that we will have some BTX Conroe motherboard goodness by Abit/Asus/DFI/etc? 'Cause it's bad enough the peeps that bought i975 boards for their 900 series chips will have to upgrade AGAIN for Conroe (so it seems), it would really suck to have to upgrade to a BTX board AGAIN a year later.

If this post doesn't make sense, I blame the Beam and Coke.

I'm sure people are used to having to upgrade their board every 6 months for a new chip, in spite of having the same socket and system bus.

The line between "used to" and "tired as hell of" is a very blurry one indeed.

Ditto - on that note, a lot of BTX parts have dried up in the channel - I hope this means a resurgence of availability.

I thought they went out of business so the name is free :p

Honestly with the way processors are shaping up to be designed, I see BTX mabye lasting longer than ATX
 
Intel's going to push for BTX, making msot of their boards BTX in a couple of years (not likely to be as many as 10). If intel makes BTX standard, what is anyone gonna do about it? lol. but i doubt they can change everyone's form factor over a year. that's like trying to win an election by campaigning the night before voting.

Intel made and pushed the ATX standard. The original IBM-made AT form factor was the standard before that. It seemed to have worked despite people whining about having to get new cases. :p

lol, seems we were just reading those a couple weeks ago too. They were saying that BTX was dead because Intel's producing cooler running chips.
 
Do what?! I splurged on my Antec P180 thinking it would be the end-all of cases and that I would never buy new one for the rest of my days (since Intel had dropped BTX for the time). So much for that :mad:
 
Having to get rid of my Tsunami dream case would really piss me off. And even if intel is going btx only in next year I'm sure there will still be a lot of enthusiast mobos for ATX cases from vendors like Asus.
Also what's the pointmy current setup with 2x120mm fans and box intel cooler for 805 d is quite quiet and once i replace it with scythe ninja will be even better. Now if conroe will run cooler than current amd chips then i can reduce fan speed.
 
Wow, A new motherboard for every chip revision they do, Now added to that, you have to get a new motherboard and a new case/PS. Way to go Intel!

If Intel goes to BTX, so will AMD. Intel will not push BTX unless OEMs and case makers comply. Case makers will not make BTX cases unless BTX motherboards come around. This is no one person's fault, so don't act like it is Intel's fault.
 
I am glad my stacker 810 is capable of BTX, but, I dont see ATX dying anytime soon.

Why dont they just flip ATX upside down?? That seems to work the same.....

BTX has quite a different layout than WTX.
 
I dont get it. Exactly what does a BTX motherboard do that a ATX motherboard doesnt? I thought it just helped keep things cooler, but $10 fan < $100+ case and PSU.
