Intel Burn Test Is Confusing Me

Hello all,

Today, I tried OCing my 990x. It is on an ASUS Rampage II GENE with the stock cooler. At 4.0 GHz, it will pass 15 runs of Intel Burn Test at standard difficulty, reaching a max temp of 65 C with 1.35V. However, it will not pass 15 runs at Hard difficulty. So, I tried running IBT at stock frequencies and voltages, and it failed 15 runs at Hard difficulty again. The chip has never gone beyond 1.376V, and I only started playing around with overclocking it today. I don't really understand what's going on: is my chip broken? The same chip will pass 12 hours of Prime95 at stock frequencies and voltages.
 
One possibility that comes to mind is that the increased memory usage of the Hard test is exposing a memory problem. I would look at IMC voltage (especially if you are populating every memory slot) and test for a bad memory stick to rule it out.

That's my thought as well. The amount of memory used and stress on the memory subsystem changes with the different levels of IBT.
 
I would agree with the others, and say that you definitely have some sort of RAM problem.

Download and run HCI Memtest, it should expose any RAM/IMC problems fairly quick. After that, test one stick at a time, and then test a known good stick in different slots to determine whether it's the RAM, motherboard, or CPU.
