Intel Atom performance?

Everyone says that the Atom is really slow compared to what Intel has now.

What is something comparable to an Atom then? 2.4GHz P4 vs. 1.6GHz Atom in performance for example.

I'm thinking of picking up the Intel board with and Atom for only $75, but I'm still a little scared of the performance. (Internet, Email, IM, MP3's, Standard Def vid and DivX, and some very light Illustrator and Photoshop use).

I was thinking of picking one up too, but then the reality of expensive mini-ITX cases and PSUs, and the lack of a PCI-E slot caught up to me. I already have a couple of small picoBTX systems. It will probably work fine for the tasks you listed.

There have been several comparisons between the Silverthrone/Diamondville 1.6GHz and Celeron-M 1.6GHz (Dothan core core with 1MB L2). The Celeron-M 1.6GHz is nearly equal to the P4 2.4GHz in performance, besides video encoding. The Atom 1.6GHz is significantly slower in most tasks, about equal to a Pentium M 900MHz. It's because Atom is an in-order execution processor with only 2 integer execution units. The P4 has 3 integer execution units and Core 2 has 4 integer execution units and both of these are out of order execution processors like all Intel x86 processors since the Pentium Pro.

The CrystalMark probably shows Atom in the best light since it supports Hyperthreading. Single threaded tasks will be a lot slower.

The Atom is slow. It is slower than Core2, even slower than the original centrino chips, clock for clock.
