Im looking for a new board for my fileserver. Wanting to get something with more than a 32/32 bus. Im looking at the new Intel 915G boards and their PCI Express. Maybe a stupid question but do the onboard 4 X SATA Ports operate on the new PCI Express standard? Im a little unclear of PCI-E and exaclty how it works.

The sata ports are native to the chipset and work just the same as they would if they were pata ports. They really have nothing to do with the pci express. On the southbridge chip for older boards you had your pata that links to it and your pci bus that links to it. All that changed is now its SATA (higher max throughput speed bus) hooked to it and PCI Express ( Higher speed and bandwith pci buss) that hooks to it.

If thats not simple enough before you had 2 hyundais towing your trailer and now youll have 2 F150's towing it.
