Intel 3.4 barely running. Need Help!

3.4 Intel P4 @ 3417 mhz
2048 mb of ram
radeon x850 xt pe w/ omega 2.6.75a drivers
windows xp


I've noticed my computer can't handle the graphics it should be able to such as high settings on BF2 so I ran 3dmark 06. Correct me if I'm wrong but these scores are laughable:

SM2 score was 988 with an average of 10-11 fps w/ AA turned off.
My CPU score (I think this is where the problem lies) was 689.

The original machine was a Dell XPS gen 4 which I tore apart and reassembled into a micro-atx box with a gigabyte micro-atx mobo. It's been "running" but I can't find out what's causing this performance leak.

What powersupply are you using and are your cpu temps ok , Your processor
could possibly be throttling because its running to hot,

300w power supply.

Also when i tore apart my dell my heatsink on my 3.4 wouldn't fit into my micro-atx box so I didn't put one on my processor.

I put a heatsink from a 2.2/2.4 intel card on it, so that might be the problem.
 
Checked bios after a period of extended running and it was at 49-52. Not sure if thats good/bad or just plain peachy.
 
You might need a bigger powersupply. If i remeber right Gen 4's come with 430 watt or 480 watt power suppiles dont remember. If its a prescott they suck a lot power at load. You might also want to try to find a differnet heatsink for it. Because if you have a prescott they get hot fast even under a good heat sink.

Im guessing you you are over heating my 3.4 could easily reach 70C while under load and this was in a 60F basement with a stock heatsink granted but you are basically running that.
 
Temp may be a problem. I set the temperature alarm to go off after the cpu went over 60C and then ran 3dmark and it started beeping like crazy.
Trying to find an active monitoring program i can run to see just how hot it's getting.

Looks like I was mistaken about my power supply. I have a 420w which should be enough [X Qpack Micro-Atx Case].

It's an old processor probaly around 3 years at least.
 
Well CPUs tend to either work or not.

You might be overheating there is a program somewhere that shows throteling (sp) that could be the culprit. If it gets to hot it will slow its self down to keep from burning up.

I didnt have my 550 (newer but same speed) long enough to really do any tests on it. Have you ran 3dMark05 on it 06 is a realy bomb on even the best of systems.

The rig in my sig gets 772 on the cpu.

you are a little behind them but most of them are overclocked. And remember the cpu affects the overall score it could be just that its getting old.
 
First Test [Proxicon sp?] my cpu ran at about 50% and thottlewatch showed it was being fine. My fps weren't that great, is an x850 xt pe really that shitty of a card?

Second [Firefly] test the beeping started and my cpu load increased to the 80% range. Throttlewatch showed a 10-20% throttle.

Third [CPU] test put my CPU workload at 100% and then the throttle kicked in. It was jumping from 0% to 80% frantically.




I'm thinking about buying a new processor but with Conroe coming out in several months i'd really like to put it off...as if I got a new one it'd have to be an AMD.

Hyperthreading doesn't make that big of a difference. If i was multitasking it would, but for single processor intensive app's such as 3dmark having it disabled increases performance.
 
Do you have the heat sink that was on it. You could take off the side of the case and put that on and see if it make a diff if thortle watch is kicking in its overheating or jump on online and find a low pro heat sink that is atleast rated for the Mhz.
 
I hate to be the naysayer, but i believe there may not be a problem at all. That cpu score is about right for an intel 3.4 and you cant run sm3 at all on your card, so that wont contribute to your score.

I think your score is correct

I agree to thus my reference to the 3DMark Scores. But his CPU dose seem to be throteling and the cpu score seems low my STOCK 3200+ shouldnt beat it by by almost a hundred points. I had a Intel 3.4 and its wasnt that slow its a pretty capible cpu exspec a old northwood or galation that he has got.
 
No 80% Throtle is not normal you shouldnt thortel at all it is overheating take the case appart blow a fan in or change heatsinks.
 
Try reinstalling your chipset drivers, but before you do that, try using the official ati drivers. If that doesn't work then I dont' know. The processor does either work or it doesn't. There is no way in hell it's your powesupply affecting your performance though, your computer would restart before the performance would lower if that were possible at all. That's all the suggestions I can think of for now.

My video card is running fine, however my processor is not. It IS overheating.

Prescotts get very hot by nature.
If a Intel gets too hot it will input blank processes to prevent itself from overheating.
We call this throttling.
Throttling is not good.
If a computer continues to overheat then it will shut down to prevent burnout.
Throttling...still is not good.
I have decided to replace my fan and heatsink.

This will lower your score in 3dMark06 since its SMP aware now, my 3.0E@3.42 will get about 1012 cpu marks with HT enabled. I did test without HT and do get a good decrease in score, you can try it yourself and find out, since douglite deleted my post which would of told how much of a diff it would make.

But if your running only a HSF for a 2.4, you need to upgrade that urgently.

How many amps are on the +12v rail of that 420w PSU? maybe its too low, but don't think this is your problem
