Decided to jump directly from air to phase change cooling and I bought a used Mach1 modified by chilly1.
Description from seller:
Mach 1 modded by Chilly1. An AMD64 mounting kit, insulation tape, and di-electric grease are included. This unit has been specifically modded for benching with R-507 refrigerant, a Mach 2 evaporator, and a bigger and faster condenser fan. These mods result in a very cold [~ -60C unloaded] single phase cooler. Just be aware, this is a bench modded Mach1. Meaning the evap temp diode has been disconnected. Chilly1 did that to prevent the controller from shutting the unit down when the evap gets below -40C. He says that these unit don't read temps acurately anyway so are useless. Now the evap can reach colder temps like -60C. You will need to get a Fluke 51 or UEI DT200 thermometer with k-type thermocouples for acurate readings.
I drove an hour to get this baby from his home and paid $260 (pretty darn good price if you ask me, hope it 'll work, hehe).
Now I was going to start disassambling of my computer and working on the cooler tonight but felt tired and wanted to ask some questions regarding the insulation against condensation.
Here are some guides that i found useful:
Guide to Insulation against Condensation
Chilly1 installation and insulation guide for A64
Prometeia AMD64/FX Easy Mod CPU kit Assembly Tips
Along with the Mach1 seller also gave me:
1) AMD64 easy mod kit (as seen above)
2) Armacell brand self-adhering insulation tape (will be used for sealing)
3) CRC brand Di-Electric Grease (will be used in socket and cpu)
4) Star brite brand liquid electrical tape with applicator brush (not sure what is this for?)
After coming back, I hit to Home Depot and bought the other necesary parts:
1) OwenScorning brand FoamSealr (roll of foam sheet - couldnt find neoprene)
2) Rust-oleum brand clear Lacquer spray
3) 1/2" touch-up paint brush
And finally went to cvs and bought the "hard as nails" iron+epoxy formula el cheapo nail varnish (to be honest spent 15 minutes to understand what to buy and even the pharmacist lady couldnt help me. Fortunately found a real woman in the store and she helped me, lol)
For now, total cost was $280 including gas - hope I will not fry/freeze my hardware
Please see below for my next steps and bless me or correct my actions:
preparation:
1) go back to stock settings (bios optimized defaults)
2) disassemble my rig - will work on my big wood table
3) set everything up again outside the case - boot into windows and shut down for good!
insulation:
1) spray lacquer on the back of mobo
2) use armacell tape to cover a large area (perhaps all of the mobo's back - what about screw holes should I be worried?) - thats about it for back of the mobo, should I use nail varnish after the lacquer?
3) For the front, I will spray the lacquer again
4) Then use nail varnish near the socket area
5) finally, use armacell tape again (i will not cover mosfets or chips) but not for whole front - perhaps around socket area only.
6) I will fill the socket with di-electric grease and use the lever and brush to make sure that it will fill with grease (should I use the grease for cpu pins?)
Possible other questions,
1) I bought the foam sheet (its dirt cheap) but i am not sure if I need it?
2) What is liquid electrical tape and where can I use it?
3) STUPID ME, where is the ON switch??
Pretty much that's it. Hopefully I will start working on it tomorrow - wish me luck...
PS: I highlighted my questions.
Thanks a million if you know/add something to my plan.
