MSI Z87, 4690K, 8 gig, Crucial 512gig SSD. Using an old 4850 vid card.
The PC would boot to the HD so I installed the SSD and ran Win 7 install from DVD. It seems like it installs, says it needs to reboot, reboots once and then won't ever go back to windows again.
Goes right to the swirling dots, Starting Windows, and then all video goes and that is the end of it.
Using an old 4850 vid card.

Is video going to an integrated output?

Probably exactly what is happening, disable IGP in bios to force windows to only use the 4850. Or, just switch the monitor to the IGP ports while you setup windows and install proper drivers from ATi.

To both above, NO, read the OP again.
Not Onboard graphics, BIOS has initiated the HW GPU and will stay with it.

OP, you have a Black Screen of Death. This is usually hung video drivers, safe mode it, remove all traces of GPU drivers using driver sweeper and restart normally.

Win8 Safe Mode that three deleiberate jamings of boot to initiate it. Google Win8 Safe Mode if unsure.

Hmm my mistake, I assumed he was running Win7 not 8. I'm still running 7 so not familiar with BlackSOD.

I am using Win 7. Can't get into safe mode, I have tried and it starts to get there but craps out before bringing up any type of useable UI. Just brought the SSD home and mounted it externally. It appears to have all the usual Windows files, even had Windows.Old from my first try but of course no users as I never got that far.
I also could never get the MB to output video on the integrated port. I pulled the old 4850 and tried to enable the onboard video and got nothing.
I might try to install Win 7 on the external drive or patch it in as a temp and see if I can get it running at home. My old reliable AMD rigs never gave me these problems. It is my punishment for trying to go to the dark side.

Trying a spinner today. Will pull everything, reset CMOS to default and see if I can use the integrated graphics but so far I have not gotten the ig working either.

Damn! Got it all together and tested. No NIC, bad USB, and now weeks to RMA. Just posted WTB 1150 board. Need one faster than they will turn it around.

I have a msi z87 45 gaming.

It took a couple re-installs of killer driver to get nic working properly.

I also have flaky front USb 3 ports.

but if you flash to the latest bios of 1.9 .. it adds stability and improved usb 3 performance among other things.

unless, of course, your board came with latest firmware or is more broken ...then sucks :( I had to buy a new board and keep the old one as a toy when my intel board died after 3 months. But if you don't fear paypal... :)

Ya from everything else you were saying in the previous posts, it was sounding more and more like a bad board. Sorry you got unlucky with that one, I have an MSi board right now as well and it hasn't been as reliable as I had hoped. With my next build, I plan to go back to Asus.
