i'm just wondering if there are any other (and better) guides out there, or if i'd be okay following along with the one i've linked. i just ordered a 128 gig crucial m4 and will be using it as my os drive. i've decided to start fresh as opposed to attempting to migrate.

by the by, i also ordered a 2tb storage drive and another 8 gigs of ram. should i install the ram before setting up windows on my new ssd? i'm definitely going to install the storage hdd after windows is all good to go.
 
Follow Sean's guide imo and adding the 8GB of ram prior to install shouldn't hurt anything :)
 
one last question!

i'm definitely going to update all my drivers (chipset, sata, nic, audio, gfx, etc) but i'm wondering if i should also flash the most up-to-date bios revision for my mobo? i have a gigabyte p55-ud4p (click here for bios info)
 
Do toss in the ram before installing Win7. All I do for my SSDs is ensure that defrag is disabled and ditch hibernation. You may want to adjust the size of, or possibly eliminate, the swap file. But that's up to you.

You can disable hibernation by opening a command prompt as an administrator and typing in:

powercfg -h off

That's it.

I also change the recycle bin behavior to immediately delete files and don't display confirmation, but again, that's totally up to you.

I leave Windows search and indexing on as I use it quite a bit.

i'm definitely going to get drivers from OEM sites. i've always updated the onboard audio and lan on my board from the realtek site. thanks for the heads up about the intel drivers though. :)

i believe the guide i linked to has a "tweaking" section which mentions things like disabling hibernation and search indexing and such. i'm going to follow that guide to a "t" and really try to get every last ounce of performance out of my new ssd. i'm coming from an hdd though, so i'm sure even without tweaking the difference is going to blow me away!
 
powercfg -h off, as mentioned by ckryan, is disabling hibernation. Also, not having Windows search somewhat defeats the purpose of an ssd, but you should ultimately do whatever you'd like to do. Needless to say, you can always reenable things :)
 
my ssd arrived today! woo!

i'm gearing up to do the install and i just have one final (and probably stupid, heh) question.

my existing OS install is on a 500gb seagate hdd. if i disconnect that drive entirely and re-install my OS onto the ssd, after windows is all setup, can i just reconnect the seagate and then do some backing up to the storage drive i ordered? my concern is that if i have windows installed on two different drives, it will cause a conflict. or will that not matter as long as i have the boot order set properly in my bios?
 
It shouldn't cause a problem to have them both connected at the same time if that's what you're asking.
 
yes, that was what i was asking. i worded the question pretty confusingly.

can't wait to get this show on the road and finally be on the ssd train! :D
