alright, i just got an antec neopower off the forums (which he garanteed working) and installed it in my system. got all the cables routed and everything hooked up (yes all connections were made) powered up the system and i get nothing. fans come up, the HDD seeks, the optical out light comes on (which is something that didnt happen with the old PSU) but i get no video output. now, when this happened i thought alright, ill just hook up the old one and see if it works, which is a thermaltake 480. well, at this point i noticed taht there is a brown spot on the mobo connector of the Tt power supply, where the two red wires at teh corner of the connector (this is 20pin atx) are... so i think, of course, fucking great, the PSU killed my board, but i wanna know exactly what those red wires are and if that is indeed what happened...

something to consider: teh system was running fine, other than the fact that i could not get the onboard sound to work(it was working initially, then it stopped for unknown reasons). i shut it down to install the new psu and disconnected the power before doing anything. i have no idea where or when this brown crap couldve come from, and if it killed my board, why the hell was it running before i changed the power supply? also, there is no sign of damage on hte board itself, and i have tried to clear the CMOS with no avail.

the only thing i cant test is the CPU, and i am wary to test the PSU at this point, maybe on an old s370 board... good idea? or should i just send it in for an RMA (or back to the guy i bought it from, its kinda scratched up, something he didnt mention.. :()

another thought: could the 24 to 20 pin ATX converter have something to do wtih this?

anyway, help is appriciated, thanks!

system that is out of commission now:

Neo2
3200+
BFG GT (I tried it with my 9600p too)
2x 512 PQI TCCD
200GB Maxtor
NEC 3500A

Does this mean you can test everything else? Check the memory in another system and see how it works, try another video card.
Have you tried the paperclip trick/voltmeter yet? Connect a paperclip from the green wire to a black one and the PSU will start, then check the voltages. If the voltages are way off, that would pretty much nail it down.

dont have a voltmeter :( the system powers on and my opticals/hdd seem fine...

if the hdd is fubared im gonna cry.

but yeah, i can test everyttihng else

the ram posted fine in my dual tualatin and my p4 box, so id say its good. the hard drive is recognized by the bios on my p4, so its good. ill test my GT now...

edit: GT tested fine in the p4. so its either a dead board, or a dead CPU. i got the board off anandtech and hte CPU is less than two weeks old

did you test the psu with the other known good system to see if it werked?
the adapter prolly isnt the problem - unless the connects are not complete.
Ok, you said "brown stuff" is that a discoloration of the plastic? or is it something else?
Look hard around the capacitors on the board, see if any are "popped" (any of them enlarged, or leaking)
Best of luck -
(it sounds like a poor psu killed your board ...) before reinstall of the memory - run memtest on it in your known good box to ensure no damage to them (as memory is ultra sensitive to power spikes)

yes, discolored plastic, but there is nothing on the board, teh board looks perfect. i am quite wary to test the PSU on anoter system as i dont want any of my other suff to get burned, but hte memory posted twice and so has all teh other stuff. ill get it memtested and stuff when i get a chance biut i think its fine..

well, the red wires are the +5v so if the +5 spiked everything but the board should be fine... as the processor draws from the +12v and the memory draws from the +3.3v... i didnt have anything in the PCI slots and my graphics card seems to be fine (so far, i hope its ok in windows)

does anyone have teh DLED bracket for the Neo2? i could really use one right now and i dont have it since i bought hte board used and that was hte one thing the guy didnt have...

memtest hasnt given me an error so far :)

gawd, never get a used motherboard.

why, exactly? im using 3 used motherboards right now. an abit IS7-E, an asus A7V133, and my Neo2, which was seemingly taken out by a surge from the +5v line, which has nothing to do with the board.

something that is really odd: whenever the power is plugged in/turned on in the back on the PSU itself, without hitting the power button, the board will turn on. that has never happend before.

well i was feeling dangerous and i hooked up the neopower to the is7-e, and it works fine. this leaves only the neo2 to blame.. :(

ill never use a Tt product again...

sorry to hear that but at least you know your new supply is good. After a little research (like going into the power supply forums and reading stickys among other things) it seems that the TT power supplies arent as good as they are supposed to be. Ack.
is the problem fixed now?

nope, im gonna have to RMA the board. in the meantime, im trying to decide between my 2.3 aXP or my 1.8p4 mobile at 2.8.. whatcha think? :p
