could anyone list some parts besides the cd-drive that could make up a decent but budget-based pc that is meant for gaming?

budget, as in ..?
I considered my computer budget, as it didn't cost much at all, yet it runs pretty much everything.

CPU: Athlon XP 2500+ Barton
Mobo: Abit NF7-S
RAM: Mushkin Lvl-2 PC3200 512MB
Vid Card: GfFX5900nu/ Radeon 9600XT

what else?

"AMD 2500+, 512mb DDR 3200, 60gb Maxtor HD + 120gb Seagate HD, 9600 pro 128mb@490/360"

Man, this is a nice ass budget system, lol.

If yours is a budget system, mine came from the trash, hehe.

But for a budget system, do go with the AMD 2500+ route. You can pick one up for under $100. Also shop around for some nice Motherboard at a For Sale/Trade threads. Should be able to pick up a nice one for under $100 also.

As for Ram, stick with PC3200 and see how low you can find a 512MB for.

I really like the 9600XT for a budget card. The price is reasonable and it performs pretty good. If you want an OEM one, Sapphire makes a good 9600XT. However, I saw some 9600XT built by ATI for about $160 at some retailers (Micro Center, Best Buy, CompUSA).

Hopefully you already have a case, optical drives, and some hard drives to stick in the rig.

Good luck,
Alex

Could you at least give us your budget? It will help us alot more if we know how much you have to spend on you system.

From the info that you have given us I can only say that it is going to be an AMD system.

You can pick a NF7 off NewEgg for $80

i got a nf7-s, barton 2500+ oc/d to 3200 (with stock heatsink), 2 sticks of geil pc3200 ddr 512mb all for about 220 bucks ;)

ram is running in dual channel (200mhz in dual channel is 400 mhz right?)

proc is running at 200mhz fsb (400mhz total)

badass :)

i recommend it ;)

XP 2500+ Barton, NF7-S, Buffalo Tech 512mb ram, 9600 (whatever variety suits your price taste - 100 for np, 145 for pro, 160 for xt)

Well i was going to post my recommendations, but looks like everyone above has beet me to it.

Barton 2500, Abit NF7, 512 PC3200 RAM, OC the sucker. ATI 9600XT.

idk...depending on budget; he could go 2.6C route and have a whoopass OCer...if only he'd have posted something like "budget for me is sub $1000.00" ....

I would go with what everyone else is recommending. Its the best budget system and you can get 3200+ speeds out of the processor.

AMD Athlon XP 2500+
Abit NF7
Mushkin PC3500 lvl 2 512MB *
WD 80GB or 120GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
ATI 9600XT or Nvidia 5900 non ultra or 5900XT(5900SE)

* The 512MB sticks are only like $133 at newegg. Thats a small price to pay for the best memory out there. Even a budget system needs good RAM especially if your going to overclock and cheap brands like Buffalo IMO is crap for overclocking.

Sorry bout that went into coma on way to the refridgerator. My friends budget is approx. $500. Already has monitor and HIDs and cd-drive like i said. Ive seen very good suggestions here to which i checked out myself and am astonished at the low prices of some of this stuff! Thanks for the help people! Any extra suggested setups following the budget of $500 closer would be awesome!

yea so
2500+: $90
NF7-S:$100
Buffalo:$80 or Mushkin:$135
Vid Card:~$150

Total: ~$420-475

SWEET!!

Well if you want to go the AMD route, get a PC2700 stick of ram because it times better with the cpu, PC3200 is more for intel chips, cuz intel chips go by pure bandwidth as amd go by cas ratings (cas rating of 2 is good for amd)

Is this proven? Wow, I really did not know that. That's cool tho, you really do save alot of money when going down the AMD route. I think I should go for an AMD setup for my next rig.
