if I want to edit my hostfile, and I want to add:

127.0.0.1 oper.somedomain.com

where somedomain.com is something I just make up

what is "oper" do?

and do you have to re-boot after you alter your host file

If you're setting a domain or subdomain to the localhost (127.0.0.1) then you're essentially blocking or rerouting it.

If you're setting all known IP addresses in the host file to a specific domain or computer name, you're ensuring that you can reach it even if you're having DNS issues.

No, you don't have to reboot. Disabling & re-enabling the NIC should do just fine.

"Oper" would be a sub-domain, if it exists for a specific domain.
