Signed contract to build new house on Saturday. 2 story and each story will have its own dedicated AC unit.

My office will be about 15' x 15'. About the same size as current office. It'll be on second floor.

Looking for Window AC unit. Will have its own dedicated 15amp circuit and I'll have 3 additional 20 amp circuits put into the office.

Sig Rig is staying and I'll be moving away from GPU folding in dedicated boxen. I will still have the 3xGTX285's in sig rig though. I'll have 2 i7 920's, Q6600, 2 laptops. Looking to add (at this point, time unknown) an SR-2.

I will be keeping the door closed so room will get hot without dedicated AC unit. What BTU rating would you recommend?
 
From my experience, BTU rating isn't the same from manufacturer to manufacturer. The Kenmoore AC we bought in the '80s had a rating of 8000 BTU and it was like a freezer when turned on regardless the temperature of the day. You could not stay in front of it for more than a few minutes without feeling very uncomfortable. It was that cold (ice) and it lasted for over 20 years. We recently replaced it with a Haier 8000 BTU unit and returned it after a few days; it was barely comparable in performance. Either they don't make them like they used to, or these BTU ratings are arbitrary.
 
Will the AC unit circuit be 110 or 220? 220 would be better if that is an option. I'd get the biggest thing you can fit in the window. You can always not turn it on full blast.
 
I was kinda curious about that.

At my price point of a max of $300, Sears has a 10K BTU in window unit right at $270.

Can't tell from reading, but would any of these be able to do "reverse fan"? i.e., can cold air from outside (during the winter) and exhaust hot air?
 
If you didn't mind spending more I'd put a small split unit into the office. The kind where the fan unit mounts on the wall next to the ceiling. I think a 1 ton unit would do the trick for you if you have
GOOD insulation in the ceiling and walls. The problem is that the second floor is always more of a heat sink. Believe me, I know. Had a over garage office before I moved back to San Antonio and the 1 ton unit could just barely keep up in the summer with my rigs running and door shut.
 
Also with the mini split idea. They run much better, quiter and cheaper in the long run. I have one myself and only paid $950 for it and saved $20 a month using the 12,000BTU mini split vs the kenmore 12,000BTU window unit.
 
Issue I see with the split unit routing the tubing down to the ground floor. I'll look into it.

Good thing is the sun sets on the other side of the house, so the office should cool down a lot quicker after the day is done.
 
Oversize venting won't work. The room you are going to use will be blocked off and the room temp won't be sensed by the tstat. A seperate unit is best for your office.
 
You can always ask evil what he did for his sever room.
 
One more vote for the split system. If you a building new you have a chance to run your DX lines wherever you want really. That will last longer and will be more bearable to be in the room with than a window unit. Those things can be even louder than folding rigs.

wow, thats perfect for my basement game room. Saves me the issue of how to heat the thing in the winter too.
 
Can you put the folding rigs in a basement? Then, have a closed room, have exaust fans at the top of the "rack" or whever te rigs are and intakes pulling air off basement floors from the other rooms. That's what I did, but you may not be able to build a basement where you are

then, if you needed more oomph, run a duct from the AC line right to it. Theshortrst run on my central air system is directly into my folding room, I just need to move it down a good 4 feet to outthe cold air closer to the acual rigs. I am not using my AC now (it's broke and I leVe tomorrow for 3 weeks) and ambient is 90+ outside, with max OC's and some GX2s OC'd I'm throwing ambient in the 78s in there, much better once I get my floor exaust in

I actually find that pretty ironic considering that TX gets more twisters than any other state. However, adding a basement probably gets significantly more expensive. to build.

texas doesnt get more twisters then any other state.. oklahoma gets more twisters then anyone else.. but the area's that do get them in texas are rural deserts/farm towns..

Here ya go, as these are some stats from NOAA. Texas does get far more tonados than any other state by a large margin, but it also is because Texas is such a big state. They have also had the most tornado related deaths during this time period as well.

BTW my in-laws we originally from Nebraska and during one nasty storm where we really did have a minor funnel cloud form over town my mother in law asked my why we don't have a basement. My only answer was who has a basement in California?

LG Neo Plama System - there is an outside unit for it as well.

The cool thing about these units is the 2 compressors inside the unit.
One runs at 60% and the other 40%, saving power when max cooling is not needed.

You can talk to your HVAC installer or contractor about getting these units installed.
There are very common, just make sure you get one with a high seer rating (Higher is better)

My unit is a 2 ton unit, so it is overkill for the room but it looks very professional and keeps the servers as cold as i want them.

votes for mini-split too

The heat gain for the room itself is about 3000 BTU (assumed 30' outside wall, 2.5x4.5 south facing window, R-19 insulation exterior walls, R-30 ceiling and conditioned space below).

The heat from the farm will probably add another 5000-6000 BTU.

You could also have your HVAC contractor oversize the supply register for the office, since you will already have central AC for the 2nd floor. Then rely on the minisplit (or window unit) to make up the difference.

Oh and congrats on the new house!

I thought about asking for a basement, but it is REALLY damn expensive to do so here as no one does them (supply and demand)

The only home I've ever owned that had a basement was in KY. That was a nice one and was completely finished (well it was when I was done with it).

When we go to the Design Center next week, I'll look into it. This looks similar to the mini Split Systems that others are suggsting. Correct?

Yes. This is an example of a mini split system. That particular type is often called a "high wall" unit. You can also get one called a cassette unit that would mount in the middle of the room in the ceiling. That installation would be a bit more difficult though.
 
depending on the size of the house basements go from 10k to 30k add ons. here in VA anyway.
