It be great to build a 4 socket 24 core rig. All I'd have to do is upgrade my Vid card for the next 4 years.

Especially when we're competing with teams that have mega-folders who are like a whole CC subteam all by themselves. So, I agree a long term focus is a far better strategy.

Not to go OT, but I don't think any of the mega-folders transfer their systems to the CC. Other teams just mobilized their boxen better than we did (due to a number of reasons) and had internal incentives to increase their personal farm sizes. I don't think that [H] should be casted away from future CC participation just because of our lackluster performance this year. Someone will always be last, it just happened to be us. We have our strengths and our weaknesses and in the end, we are still #1. Are we resting on our laurels? Maybe. But I also feel that some of us are preparing for big things (make it multi-processor systems or new tech folding farms). Sadly, borging has gone out of style, which was the specialty of [H].
 
While those 6 core Opty's look impressive, I was wondering how many of you guys (if any) fold using the 4 core variety? Any major difference in production compared to the quad 6600?

The economic situation out there has hurt a lot, as business and tech companies are becoming more and more conscious of electricity costs and are trying to cut back as well....thus making successful borging even more of a challenge. ;)

Do you think Stanford would Open Source the client software? Not that I could rewrite it for linux but im sure somebody would.
CUDA is already supported under linux....i mean those 1u GPGPU boxes can only run on linux and are not supported for Windows.

I had very bad experience with borging and stopped it back in 2001 after several failed attempts. I'm speaking of non work-related borgs. Others had much better experiences.

As far as the mega-folders and the CC was concerned, I believe at least one team benefited from such a switch. Didn't the winning team have help from a mega-folder?

Is this native support? We've discussed running the GPU under Wine / Linux, but at about a 95% rate compared to native Windows. I'd love to see native Linux support for the GPU as well...
 
CUDA is fully functional under Linux, maybe even more so then windows.

Its the FAH client that has to be run in Wine.

There is also that Tyan board that you can add an expansion board to it, for another set of 4 sockets.
Essentially 48 core system.

While it will cause your e-peen to grow the Quad opteron setups have one major flaw when it comes to its xeon nehalem counterparts. That is $/Performance

For this comparison I used the cheapest parts I could find on newegg. And used the lowest priced AMD CPU, and its Intel Ghz Counterpart.
AMD:
4x 2.2ghz Istanbul CPU - $1800
Cheapest 4socket mobo - $400
12x2gb Ram min of 24gb for FAH VM's - $400
Power supply - $250
TOTAL: $2850

Intel:
4x Intel e5520 2.2ghz - $1520
2x Dual Socket mobos - $500
12x2gb Ram - $450
2x 750w PSU's - $250
TOTAL: $2720

The Intel comes out slighly less, but it would kick the AMD systems ass when it comes to PPD
You could save around another 800 on the Intel CPU's by going with the e5502 xeon's and prob still outperform the AMD setup.
Plus power savings, as the intels are 80w TDP, and the AMDs are 130w TDP

There are 4-way Xeon boards as well but the total cost of such systems would probably run much higher.
 
Nitro, you make some good points with the costs there ..

As you mention, the Intel Xeons do have a lower TDP, which should equal lower power usage.

Don't get me wrong, i really like my dual xeon setup, but i think for my next build I am going to go with single xeon setups due to the lower tdp of the CPUs.

I am waiting on the motherboards to come down in price.

I have been using some great microatx & atx board from intel that are rock solid and are very wallet friendly .. like $50 - $85.
(Build my Untangle Router, WHS, and HTPC using the Intel P41/P43 boards)

They are nice from the standpoint of having DVI / VGA onboard & gigabit lan with no extras I don't need on a F@H build.

That takes about 1/2 the costs out of the dual cpu setups but about the same folding power ( not counting the newer -bigadv units just released)
