worked like a charm. im very impressed with how easy this was. for anyone that doesn't want to check it out, here's it in a nutshell:
1. use vista's disk management to shrink the drive.
2. boot to xp disk and install xp on new partition.
3. run a small piece of software that makes it easy to choose vista or xp at boot up.
