Currently building a new computer for my friend, and it's all set up. However, a few moments after the computer is on, it will reset itself, or shut itself down.

Checking in the BIOS quickly showed that the temp was 84º.. although I am unsure if that WAS the CPU.

The HS and chip was installed correctly, so this is confusing the hell out of me. I did not apply thermal tape as I had none, however some was on the HS out of the box. The manual with the chip show to pull off tape [as I have before] but there was no tape on this one. Just a grey block, which I believe is the thermal.

Anyways, pretty sure it has SOMETHING to do with the chip.. everything else is fine. And there is really only one way to install the HS.. because it was secure.

Any help would be appreciated.. thanks!

[Edit] The HS did not have the pull tape, but DID have the plastic cover.. so there is thermal tape on it. </noob>
 
If the temp was 84 celcius you probably fried the chip. If it says 84 Farenheit then that's not the cpu temp, that's the mobo/system temp. Check the temp again to make sure and give me the cpu temp and we'll take it from there.
 
You sure the HSF is connecting properly with the chip? Make sure the black square/rectangle on the bottom of the stock HSF IS making contact with the CPU. If it still doesn't work, go out and buy some thermal tape or thermal paste. Because the comp is shutting down to the large CPU temp... so make sure it is touching properly.
 
which cpu are you using?? if you were using a intel cpu, you probably didnt fry the cpu but if u were using a amd, then too bad and also
the new 64 althlons have that thermal burning thingy, if it gets too hott it tunrs off like the pentium 4 chips
 
Sorry for the late reply. It was indeed 84º for the chip, and aye, I was lucky I didn't fry the thing. Good mobo protection I guess, I dunno.

It was indeed that the heatsink was on WRONG. God only knows how I could pull that off.. this is not the first computer I have built even.. I have built many.

It was my fault for not actually looking at the heatsink closely before I booted it up. The chips fine, as is the computer. All is good. I have learned my lesson.. to not rush while building computers :|

lolz yah that will about do it, or the mo-bo could have been grounding itself and shorting out.
