alright i wasnt too sure where to put all my questions, so this seemed like a good place to start. when i graduated last year i bought a dell dimension 4600. i havent done anything ever to modify a computer besides adding ram. i would really like to do a case mod, and i was going to buy a case on ebay and just start playing around, but then it struck me that i dont know shit about putting a computer together...so basically where do i start? can i put my computer into a new case without totally f-ing it up? also i want to upgrade the speakers, i want my computer to be faster, and i was thinking about adding a better video card. any suggestions or guidence would be appreciated, thanks

Dell uses a proprietary form for its motherboards, so you'll have to replace that. They also have a special cooling system for the CPU that works with the case, so you'd have to buy a new CPU cooler, their power supplies also suck and you'd probably want to buy a new one (Although the one it came with will work if you really don't want to upgrade it) other than that, you should be okay with what you want to do.
 
nope live in ohio...not delaware...go to kent state. alright a few more questions..motherboard? what form do i need if not proprietary? also if i get a larger power source how big do i need (not how big do i want...how big do i need! jk) also cooling system, will the fans that come with/i buy with the case going to be sufficient? thanks again

also another question, what are the advantages to a water cooled system? im not thinking about getting one ive just noticed that people have them, and i have never seen or heard of this until this site...thanks!
 
I believe he was asking about me when he mentioned UD, and yes it's where University of Delaware is (At least one of their locations, the other part is up in Wilmington) however I don't attend there, but I know a few people who do, I live a few miles away from the newark campus.

Anyways, the advantages to water cooling are lowered temperatures which let you overclock higher or just prolonge the life of your components, it also makes your system quieter.

As for the power supply, depending on what you plan on putting in your system, you could probably get away with buying a 350 watt Antec. You can pick one up for about $65 at best buy. I'm running everything in my computer (specs in sig) off a 350 watt turbolink PSU that came with my old case. Check in the power supply FAQ thread in the power supply section to find out more about what power supply brands are good.
