what do you do?
say you purchase a new widescreen monitor and you dont want it to "stretch" whatever you're doing...what do you do? is there software or something that will force it to "unstretch" and show proper 1:1 with black bars on either side? or with these monitors are you always forced to use widescreen mode?
suppose you dropped resolution down to like 1024x768 (or something lower) would it still "stretch" the screen to make it wide?

i am curious before i decide on what monitor. still in the air.

and how common is it for software (or games) to conflict with a widescreen monitor?

*side note*
my favorite game is still the old Unreal Tournament g.o.t.y. version and i have no clue how it rocks with a wide lcd yet.
also, dont know a thing about programs that may not be "compatible" with widescreen monitors.

any info to shed light would be great

and while on the subject...which monitors do you know of that will do a 1:1?
is this dependent on the video card? lets say a 7900gs? will the above concerns still be an issue?

If you have an Nvidia videocard scaling can easily be done through the Forceware drivers. One of my monitors (Dell 2007FPW) has 1:1 but I rarely find a use for it...most pc games can be easily hacked to widescreen if they don't support it. I don't even use 1:1 on the VGA for my Xbox 360 because I prefer to fill the screen....it really doesn't look "stretched".
